50k is more than I'm living on now.
Understood - there are many variables ... one person or two? Situation with dependents? Area of country?
$50k/year is one thing in Louisana ... quite another in NYC

And if you plan to take this year's equivalent of $50K out of a $1M stake every year in the future, you run a pretty high risk of running out of $ before you die.

I know this guy in Nigeria who has an incredible opportunity for you. He or one of his associates email me about it every other month but I just don't have the 1 million to invest right now. He seems real credible and is a king or prince or prime minister or something.
I've wiped the shit off. It can be wiped off you know.

Depending on your area, I'd consider a portion of it into solid assets such as rental homes. If you know the market, you can have a constant income flow and maintain the value of your investment.
I didn't plan to become a landlord, but it has worked out extremely well for me.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks everyone, and for the laughs! I have actually been looking into rental options, using a management company... Lots to consider, and plan for.
Thanks again!

I have nothing to contribute (financially or advise-wise) but I wish you the best of luck. My XBIL had to return to work at the age of 73 when his retirement account took a hit during the collapse.
I know I'll be thinking about you from my retirement cardboard box under the overpass

I'll let you know when Mr. Trac-Fone kicks and I collect his life insurance. Until then, I will be worrying whether I will lose the house, after all.

The market. The market. The market. I'd spread it around, find a broker you love or that you can mooch info off of, read Baron's every day, watch the charts and trends. I have someone do a lot of this for me, but he believes time=money, so he is up my butt a LOT about what's going on and what he is seeing. It is great as I have learned a lot. I made a killing on Vietnam this year, don't be afraid to put money in China and Europe (even though Europe is doing something weird right now.) I've sold off some stuff for now, waiting for the September low.
I believe in cycles. And in not acquiring debt. Our house will be paid off when I turn 50 and my spouse wants to retire in 8 years at 54. That's our goal. We also intend to live simply when retired, travel some, but really, just LIVE.
