We have two children 3 and under, we had financial difficulties, and we are near 40.
That being said, his ONS was unrelated to a midlife crisis. It was related to escapism but only as much as everything else in his life related - he likes a lot of attention (to the expense of others) - and at the time he was a relapsed alcoholic who felt a large sense of entitlement out of life that he deserved more than he was getting.

We had an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy (we are thrilled with our son now, but we only wanted two children, and they were 16 and 10, we were going to be free in 8 years!) when I was almost 41.
FWH met OW when DS was just 1 years old, EA started and a few years later PA. FWH was tired of his high paying, high pressure job. So:
FWH: 43 years old
Children: 20 y.o., 14 y.o., and 4 y.o.
Work: stressed out by his high pressure job
What a cliche!
BW (me) & FWH both over half a century; married several decades; children
d-day 3/10; LTA (7 years?)

While not in financial trouble, after our whole life of him making far more than I did, I passed him up in earingins. My career was on the move and his was stagnant. (at this point I would like to add that this was a CHOICE we made together, but whatevs)

You will find cheaters of all characterics: young, old, M with kids, without, rich, poor.
The ony characteristic they all have in common is they are all broken.

we had no financial difficulties although we were both in our 40's.
Our son was in Afghanistan.
The validation I received (not sure on him) because of the accolades our children received was coming to an end, as they were graduating. This awful need made me look for validation again outside myself. Sick, sick, sick.
I can see it all plain as day now. And I have apologized to my children for using them.
