Thank you all so much for your caring words of support. It means so much to me.
Last night was sad but also some relief that his suffering was over. Today I just ache with missing him. I grabbed a coffee mug without thinking... it's one of my favorites and says "Home is where your cat is". 
I need to update my signature info, but I can't bear to do it just yet.
Thank you again everyone for your sympathy and for sharing your own experiences. My dad always says it takes a special person to truly love a pet, because it is a guaranteed heartbreak. It's no surprise that there are so many of those special people like this here. This is such a wonderful community.
