She charged at one of my Boy Scouts' dads tonight when he was in our living room. It looked to knight that she didn't want him near me. Scary

This may be somewhat related to her barking at night, might not.

How old is your female, is she still intact or spayed and do you know what her bloodlines are? In other words did you go looking at breeders for her or did you get her at a rescue?

She is 20 months old and spayed. We got her from a breeder. Some European lineage with CHs in conformation and schutzhund.

We initially wanted to do schutzhund with her but were persuaded that this would make her less desirable as a member of the family (pet) so we decided to work on obedience instead.

I was working with a trainer to start doing rally (sp?) but the trainer moved and I have not found anyone else to work with since.

She's starting to make me think we should have gone the schutzhund route....

I do IPO with my dogs. I did it when my kids were little. Ask my kids who my best behaved rottie was and they will tell you it was my IPO dog.

OK, if she has IPO lines then that explains some things as well as her age, I was thinking she might be around 18 months. She is starting to come into herself and is trying out her protection skills. You are going to have to start getting really firm with her that you control things around the house and not her. And she needs to get a job real quick. As you can see, she is giving herself one,lol.

IPO is a lot of time, I am at club three times a week and training 5-6 days a week with my dogs. Big time investment. Can you find an obedience club for you guys?

I have been trying to find any kind of club. We live in a very rural area but I'm willing to travel to give her a job. I'm afraid we would get kicked out of a club unless I learn to handle her instead of the other way around.

How is she around other dogs?

What about where you took her for the board and train, do they have a club there?

She hasn't bit any dogs but she bristles up at first and then she's pretty pushy. She wants to play but she seems to be bossy if that makes sense? She was playing with my friend's lab and GiGi kept running her over and the lab was probably 10 pounds heavier than her.

She's bossy with us too but we correct her. She nudges up under our hands to get petted or playfully mouths us when we pet or brush her. She gets a correction for that so does it less frequently but still does it ESPECIALLY if we slacked on her exercise for some reason.

We play tug with her or play with a flirt pole too sometimes but I would love to get her involved in something we could work on together.

Oh boy, it sounds like you have a working dog on your hands for sure.

How close was that board and train to you? You said they did IPO training? And agility?

Often places like that will have clubs

The board and train is about 6-7 hours away from us. They are in Austin and I think are very well known for IPO. They would take her as a board and train for IPO but I wouldn't be able to work with them regularly.

I was going to PM you the name of the training academy she went to but it doesn't work.

His place doesn't look like he has a club, but you never know. He may know where a club is close to you.

I don't know how close you are to him, but yeah you are going to have to find her some type of job that forces her to use her mind. That uses up a lot of energy.

Some dogs actually do better crated. Go back to crating her and see how she does.
