I have 4 boxes and two cats. I used to have 3 cats, and I could probably retire one or even two.
I like the Arm&Hammer Clump and Seal since it is corn based and has almost not dust. I dont feel like it clumps as well though as the clays so I actually mix in some A&H clumping clay type too. I feel like although the clay ones vary in dust level depending on brand, they all have way more dust than I like.

I buy Cat's Pride with the pink cap. It is made of very fine, sandlike pieces. They seem to like the feel of it. We tried other litters, but they kept flinging it everywhere.

I use Tidy Cats small spaces. I try to scoop weekly, but I'm never successful. Luckily, my one cat still uses the box even though it's not clean. I'm not sure when the last time I scooped it out was... I should do that after I post this!!
I find the small spaces litter to hide odors very well. It's not as dusty as fresh step. If I scooped it daily, I'd never smell it!!
Failure is success if we learn from it.

I vote for Tidy Cat! My friend bought litter once and it didn't clump. Took me forever!
Tidy Cat clumps and keeps it clean with little mess.

We've been ordering Dr. Elsey's from amazon. It seems heavier rather than lighter, but, lots less dust and tracking. Also, it comes right to the door which makes my back happy. My favorite discovery about cat stank is this, if you can 'sacrifice' a room, (currently our laundry room) install a pet door between that room and the next, abracadabra! Cat stank stays in the stanky room. We also have a little bath mat by the door so they wipe their filthy little feet on the way out. Good luck finding what works for you and your guys
oh, we have 5 boxes for 5.

One cat, one box. I've been using the lightweight stuff for a couple of months, and I like it a lot. The only issue I have with it is the same issue I have with all litters - it tracks like crazy. Maybe it's the cat rather than the litter?

It's not so much the smell for me as long as I stay on top of it. It's more the ease of cleaning the clumps (some of it stays wet and doesn't clump) and the tracking, too. Also, the dust.
I keep the boxes in an out of the way spot in the finished basement so that's not an issue, either.
I just want to not break my back scraping out the pee that has become a gooey mess from the non-clumpability, and not find the whole area dusty, and not finding bits of litter everywhere would be nice, too.
Is that too much to ask???
DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

Before my cat passed away in April
- I had one box for him. I liked Fresh Step best for a long time until it seemed to become simultaneously more perfumy and more expensive. I switched to regular non-clumping Tidy Cat.
I could never bring myself to buy clumping because when it first came out, my vet told me there were problems with the fine particles being inhaled by cats as the scratched, and then clumping in their lungs and making them sick. Since clumping litter is everywhere now, I'm sure they've made it safe, but I could never make myself buy it.
My little dog is also a kitty roca connoisseur but I solved that by putting the box between a cabinet and the wall and blocking it with a baby gate. The cat would jump over the gate and on top of the covered box, then hop down and go in to do his business. My dog is a great jumper but it never occurred to him to jump over the gate. I think dogs minds just work differently than cats.

LOL, the glamour of pet owning. We have 3 house cats and 3 litter boxes. We use Berkley & Jenson (BJ's brand) scoopable multi-cat litter. Plus, we put a thin layer of Fresh Step crystals on the bottom of the litter boxes every time we completely empty the boxes. The BJ's brand is relatively low dust and clumps well. We still have issues with them tracking litter out of the boxes.

I have friends whose cat uses the toilet.
I thought they were weirdos.
Now I have cats and I wish I had taught my kitties to use the toilet.
ALL kitty litter is disgusting.
I may have reached a point where I'd piss on him if he was on fire.... eventually!!

3 cats, 2 boxes. They are good kitties and don't seem to care too much if we forget to scoop for a few days.
DD is really bad about remembering to scoop the cat box I have assigned to her. Her's can go a week- then she usually just dumps the whole thing and refills it.
I usually use Pet Pride or Cat's pride or some such. If Tidy Cat is on sale I will use that. I also use generic....really depends on my budget that trip to the store. Publix generic, Kroger generic...have also used the generic from BJ's when I had a membership. Theirs was pretty decent.
I did try the Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal and really thought it did well for odor control. But it is more expensive.
I can't seem to control the scatter of litter regardless of type. I do have a monster cat with the fluffiest feet. They seem to always have litter on them. It gets everywhere, even with mats outside the boxes.

I have one cat, one litter box, and I use wood pellets. They soak up the pee nicely, then when it is used up, I recycle it by putting it in the fireplace to burn away, so it gives me heat too. Wood pellets are also super cheap, I buy one bag from the horse-store, which sells them for horse-bedding. Because horses need so much, the bags are really cheap, like 3 pounds, about 5 dollars for a bag that lasts months.
When I lived in America I had six cats, and not everyone got along, so it got complicated. I had to basically divide the house, downstairs were 3 cats, one litter, upstairs 3 cats, one litter. Before I did that, the submissive cat was too afraid to use the main litter, and would poop all over the house, fearing to pee/poop in the litter box lest 'monster cat' approached him when he was in a vulnerable position crouching to pee/poop.
Dividing the house worked really well.

I have 2 cats and 1 box. I was told by WXDIL when she worked at a vet that you should have one more box than you have cats.
I use the Arm and Hammer Multi-Cat in the Orange Box. It seems to do OK considering I am real bad about letting it go too long and then dumping it all and putting in new litter once or twice a week. The cats are outside half the time too which helps.
The best trick was when the dog started peeing in the catbox but the cats were not happy with that and remarked the carpets on me.

I had two cats, now down to one. I've used World's Best Cat litter for years and it's awesome. It's made from corn. Has no perfume or dyes in it. Soaks up urine really, really well. Clumps well and doesn't track all over. It's about as good as it gets for me. I get mine at Petsmart. I also had 3 boxes for 2 cats and am now down to 2 boxes for the one cat.

Tidy Cat scoopable - any type worked best. I tried others but returned to Tidy Cat.
At one point there was 2 boxes for 5 cats. it was scooped 2x or more a day to ensure there was never issues because at one point I had two diabetic cats out of the 5. Diabetic cats pee a lot...a whole lot.
My beloved Opie recently passed and joined his brother and cousins so now Maya has 1 box which is still cleaned 2x a day.
I can admit I'm OCD about the litter boxes and surrounding area being tidy and not smelling. There is a small trashcan next to the box and I empty it every day or every other day. I sprinkle Arm & Hammer litter box deodorizer into the box every 2 days. The broom/pan is right there to sweep up the tracked litter - which gets everywhere. Opie, bless his little kitty heart, loved to kick the litter all over the place so between that and his diabetes a lot of litter was used.
