Two stick out in my mind.

I had just birthed my daughter and was nursing. I'm well endowed anyway and what with nursing I looked like a breast implant operation gone wrong. Plus I had gained a ton of weight. I specifically told FWS I didn't want any clothing.

He got me a Victoria's Secret sweater. The kind that stopped right at the waist. It WAS a very pretty blue in his defense but it was obviously something HE liked. I was crushed. Never wore it.

#2 was Black Christmas (I busted him and FB#14 the day after). I had asked for a pair of pearl stud earrings. Instead he got me a pair of "less than .08 carot" diamond studs from Zales and adding insult one of the posts was so badly bent you couldn't wear them. I already owned a very nice pair of larger diamond studs. I didn't even try to fake my "thank you" through that one...... They were referred to as "the piss-ant little diamonds" because 48 hours later I didn't care if his poor widdle feelings were hurt or not.

After that debacle I just bought my own Christmas gifts and FWS endured it.

My MIL cannot accept the fact that I don't wear a size 22. Never have...even at my heaviest. She cannot accept the fact that people are shaped differently and that means sizes fit differently. She cannot accept the fact that she is not the same size/shape as me. Or that I cannot wear the styles that look good on her. Even at my heaviest I always had a waist. I've always been an hourglass shape. She thinks that because she wears bigger shirts and wants her shirts to cover her butt, that I should wear the same thing. That would mean I would be wearing something as wide as my hips and hide the fact that I have a shape. Right now I wear a size 12 in jeans...actually could wear a 10 around my waist. I can tell she doesn't believe it. And I'm not a 12 from the fat lady section. I can buy a 12 from anywhere and fit. I wear medium shirts and depending on the cut I can wear a small. My whole Xmas outfit for tomorrow night are mediums from Target and New York and Co! But she wears her shirts xxl. Anyway, my point in all of this is that she will buy me clothes at Christmas that are 5 sizes too big because she cannot accept the fact that even though I have been heavier and I'm still no twig, that I am not as heavy as she is or shaped in anyway the same. It's annoying because it makes me doubt that I look somewhat decent!

When I was 13, my step-father's mother, in general a selfish and childish woman, went all-out one year, buying my step-brother and my little sister wonderful, thoughtful gifts. I watched my siblings open them and held mine on my lap, wanting to wait and open it last of all. I was so excited! I thought perhaps she had finally kind of woken up to us kids.

Once everything else was unwrapped, I began on her gift. She liked to reuse paper and bows, so I was oh-so-cautious. I remember popping the tape carefully and setting the bow aside, then unrolling the paper to reveal...

... a cheap plastic box thing. I looked up at her to say thank you even though I didn't know what it was, but she leapt in. "It's a cotton ball holder! For your vanity!"

The vanity she promised me two years before that she later decided she didn't want to part with.

My mom asked, "Oh, you're giving her the vanity too?" Mom was as puzzled as I was.

"No," said grandma. "I told you, I'm keeping it."

(I gave that box to my sister. She kept Barbie shoes and accessories in it.)

(((Thren))) It's sad when hurtful people single you out and it's so obvious. Or promise things that make you feel special and they never happen. I would have given it away, too.

My worst is torn. A shower radio from a guy I was dating probably cost him maybe $5. No thought what so ever. Second would have been a full size flamingo planter. I love flamingos but really this thing was half the size of me.

When I was about 7 my older (by 2 years) sister and I got rag dolls for Christmas. I loved mine!!

My sister decided she loved mine as well and took it, giving me hers.

I asked my mom if I could have my doll back and my sister said I was lying and the doll was hers. My mom looked at me and said "it doesn't matter what doll you opened, that one is for your sister"

I was crushed.

Years later I found pictures of me from that Christmas opening "my doll". I was pissed even then

My daughter actually has it now.....up on a shelf.

I attended the wedding of a family friend, 2 weeks before my own. Another fam friend was sitting by me and giggling because she had given a crock pot to the couple, that she had received as a wedding gift. She came to my house a month or d so after my wedding and spotted a crock pot. She busted up laughing when I told her ot was from the friend who had gotten married before I. It was the same gift she re-gifted. So I received a gift that had been re-gifted twice. It was pretty ugly and not like the cool ones that had just come out.

My MIL was the queen of second hand gift giving. (Was because we don't speak any more - she's not dead )

The last gift I received was a particularly ugly pair of clip on earrings I had seen her wear many times. Over the years I received many pairs of clip- ons from her - my ears are pierced but perhaps she never noticed.

And before you rush to her defence - no she does NOT have dementia.
