If we do the classics first, this would be my list of suggestions: "Little Women" (my all time favorite) by Louisa May Alcott, "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin. And since we have both men and women wanting to join thought we might go gender neutral with "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" or "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain. Ready to get started.

Just looking at what Amazon categorizes as Adventure, I'm not sure what that even really means.

I think of Adventure as either classics (Kipling, Burroughs) or Clive Cussler type stuff.

Amazon thinks of Adventure as somehow containing the Millennium Trilogy, The Help, Sookie Stackhouse, Christine Feehan's unhot nonsense, Karen Marie Moning's hot nonsense, some random James Patterson, and Wuthering Heights.

Wuthering Heights is Adventure?? Who catalogs their books? A classic adventure to me is more like The Swiss Family Robinson. I'd think the Secret Garden would even be an adventure before Wuthering Heights? I forgot about Adventure as a category. Is that the first genre we'll read?

I think of Adventure as Non fiction like Krakauer or the Shackleton story or stories of survival.

True Adventure, I guess.

I can see Cussler being catagorized as fiction adventure.

Ok, me again. Went on line looking for Adventure books. Here's a list that looked interesting to me: Non-fiction Adventure; "the Worst Journey in the World"-Apsley Cherry-Garrard, "West with the Night"- Beryl Markham, "Travels in West Africa"- Mary Kingsley, "The Oregan Trail"- Francis Parkman, "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains"- Isabella L. Bird, "The Darkest Jungle"- Todd Balf. Adventure fiction; "Roughing It"- Mark Twain, "Home of the Blizzard"- Douglas Mawson, "The Perfect Storm" - Sebastion Junger. This is my 2 cents. Sorry I can't put it in a more reader friendly format. My computer died and I'm on my backflip. P.S. you can look up all the titles I listed here on National Geographic/Books on Adventure.

My entries into true Adventure would be;

The Cruelest Miles; The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic.

It's the true story that inspired the movie Balto about the diphtheria epidemic that hit Nome, Alaska in 1925 and the incredible and miraculous journey of 674 miles that they undertook in a winter blizzard to reach medicine for the children.

Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea. In 1857 the SS Central America (a side wheel steamer ship) went down during a hurricane off the Caroline coast. Scores of lives and 21 tons of gold from the gold fields of California were lost. in 1980 a man set out to find the wreck and salvage its treasure and learn its secrets.

NA are we the only 2 still pursuing this?

Nah, BB. I've just been an avid reader my entire life. I used to make my mom and dad read to me for hours when I was little. I could read in kdg. I read the unabridged version of Little Women when I was in 4th grade. Fell in love with it. Just always had a passion for reading and a really high reading comprehension level. My youngest DD is the same way. She has a very comprehensive vocabulary and reads on a higher level than her age. My cousin is the same way. Your new friend is just a book nerd. Lol!

Ok, that sounded conceited and like I'm a book snob. Far from it. I love everything. I like a Louis L'amour western, a good Nora Roberts or Janet Dailey, the same as I love the classics. I'm almost afraid to say it here, but I love the Twilight books!! I just love to read.

This sounds awesome picking gentres first. Does anyone want to start a list of gentres, then we look at voting for each one. I am not fussy, it does not have to be alphabetical. What do people think??

Niki you wanted a list of genres: Adventure, Auto Biography/Biography, Classics, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Horror, Humor, Mystery, Romance, Sci Fi, Thrillers, Westerns. If I've missed any, please add them. There are some Adventure titles thrown out there, anyone else have suggestions for Adventure titles?

What do you all think about making a genre list, combine the two here and then each pick a topic and present 2 books or so to the club to pick from.

Of course, when our turn comes. So like if NA picks adventure and presents her list for us, we pick and so on.

I know that would get me out of my comfort zone and I think it would be fun to research books for topics or genres that I normally wouldn't read.

Just a suggestion.

I was kind of thinking that maybe if everyone was interested we would all pony up two titles for whatever genre we are in and then we could all vote on which one sounds the most interesting.

That would give us the widest array of different titles to choose from.

Summerbaby and I just started at A for lack of a better place and picked Adventure and listed some choices.

If that sounds good to everyone they can put their picks forward and then we can all choose.

If that doesn't work for everyone then we can do whatever needs to happen.
