I have thick slightly wavy hair which I usually cut myself in a long "gypsy shag"...to my shoulders.
(My hair -- and nails -- grow extremely FAST! 
)
I have yet to find a hat that suits me but I usually like them on others. Feather is a plus!

My hair is naturally very curly. I straighten it only when I want to look a bit more sophisticated. Both have their pros and cons
