W & I were in grad school when we got married. I couldn't do much reading in my field because I needed to take language courses, while she was studying for comps during our first year together. That meant late nights studying for her and lots of free time for me.
So I read lots of novels, especially murder mysteries and tales of international intrigue. One of my favorite authors was Eric Ambler.
I picked up one of the paperbacks the other day, and he seems like a better writer today than he seemed 45 years ago - and the novels were published in the late '30s.
If you like stories of intrigue, I urge you strongly to go to your local library and demand any Eric Ambler novel your system has.
If you're a chick snooping around, you might like Helen MacInnes, but Ambler is a lot more realistic....

Funny, thought this would be about guys' equivalent of chick lit, and thought of Matt Dunn
But classic and gritty intrigue - Dashiell Hammett is my go to guy. And the 007 James Bond books by Ian Fleming are COMPLETELY different from the movies! They really do his writing a disservice . . .

Sissoon, ouch! The Eric Ambler books are $$ for Kindle, but I'm downloading The Light of Day. . . Sounds great!
Am reading the Russell Blake JET series. She is the kicka$$ female version of Jason Bourne, only prettier. And probably a better aim.

Glen Cook, Dan Abnett and Steven Pressfield are my go-to authors for "I need something without kissing parts." Some of them have fucking parts. But it's almost all in the Garret Files series and he mentions it like a passing conquest, "then me and the redhead demigod had a three way with the gangster lords daughter. Man, I have a headache today."
