What a day. Being a special ed teacher is just insanity sometimes.
I teach all day...I don't really put any down time into my day. I teach a small group of kids reading, language arts, and math. Then I coteach an inclusion science and social studies class. So, it's a full day of teaching and then today I had a case conference with a parent. I knew this conference was going to be difficult...the parent is a bit of a bully...so I called in all the big guns (principal, special ed supervisor, gen ed teacher, counselor, speech teacher). And this guy came in spoiling for a fight. Did I mention I'm sick? Ugh. But I got through the meeting, I was able to hold my 'line' and hammer out some appropriate accomodations for this kid. And dad left happy. My principal and special ed supervisor complimented my ability to hold my ground but be so nice about it. I wanted to tell them that I've had plenty of practice this past year.
But I didn't and that's progress for me, not to reference the divorce or ex-shat. I just smiled and asked when I could expect my hazard duty pay.
I am just wiped out from today. Fingers crossed that tomorrow is low-key and none of my students will have a meltdown.

I work with special ed folk, and my special ed co-teacher is a godsend. My hat's off to you, tesla-- I know how hard it is and how often your work isn't appreciated (especially by parents). Gosh, I do love those fun meetings; I'm glad you surrounded yourself with supportive people and didn't back down. Some parents go beyond the role of advocate, and they don't do their kids any favors when they do so.
Anyway, wishing you a mellow Wednesday. Funny how the crap we share on here does help with the tough stuff in teaching, doesn't it? You're absolutely right about that.

Tesla,
I have a special ed kid who is now on an IEP (3rd grade this year). I know how much work it is as a parent, let alone a teacher who must assist not only my son, but teach a classroom full of other kids.
I want to thank you for the work you do every day. Your patience and care is so important to your students, and to their parents. Every single time I interact with my son's classroom teacher, intervention specialist, and special help teachers, I cry out of overwhelming thankfulness for all they do. My son is making progress, and it's wonderful people like you that make that happen.
On behalf of all of us parents, I'm so sorry you had a rough day, but so very glad you are helping us shape our children.
