I don't think there is anything wron with distance learning. In fact I will likely be pursuing my BSN and MSN from a state university that is a predominantly distance based program.

The difference is that the admissions criteria is much more stringent and my degree will cost less than half of what I would pay to UoP.

And like it or not because some distance education schools have less stringent admissions requirements and they accept much higher numbers of students at a grossly exaggerated tuition rate these schools are seen as substandard and usurious by many employers (and in many cases their concerns have proven to be grounded). As such degrees from those schools are often not valued as highly by employers. So my half-the-cost degrees will be more valuable to me by virtue of their increased standing with employers.

And if I recall correctly there was some considerable doubt about UoP's accreditation earlier this year due to some concerns over their business model and sufficient separation of control between the college and the parent company.

idkam -- my intent was not at all to make you feel bad about your program, so I hope that's not what happened! I commented here to help someone who hadn't already decided what to do know the reality of what I see out there -- which BobbiSue (who has more experience in the education industry) has said is a reality that's in the minority.

If you did your due diligence, I'm sure you'll be fine. As I said earlier, I'm sure the perception is different depending on many factors -- industry, location, etc. All three of my post-college jobs have been in the same industry, same location of the country, and at extremely competitive companies. Certainly not a representative sample :)

My biggest concern is people taking out huge loans for school (online or traditional) who haven't done their due diligence. As part of my job, I follow this, and it's becoming a staggering problem. (If you care to, google "student loan crisis" -- so many people are in untenable situations with no good way out.)

As I keep saying, though, I am very pro-education. I just think that you need to be smart about it (ha!) in terms of where you go, how you finance it, what you study, etc.

And, once you're in a company or if you have good connections, it doesn't really matter where you went. Where you went to school can just be an easy first-screen for companies overburdened with resumes.

Sorry to bang on about this; just felt like I needed to clarify again! Hopefully this will be my last post about it!

Phmh, Thanks for clarifying your point of view again. I'm familiar with the "student loan crisis" too. However, I will google it to get more insight.

SouthernGal, I understand what you're saying. My SO wants me to go to a different college for my graduate degree, so I will definitely look into some of the other colleges.
