We both came to the M with no assets, so everything (which is not a lot) is marital property. We're in VA so they're pretty generous with alimony. Basically what I'm considering is a separation agreement that would protect my healthcare but also protect me in the event that he started drinking/drugging again and ran up debts. I sacrificed my career for his, and would be destitute if I were turned out with only "my" things, which would be one cat and 500 Lbs of books!
