Oh, thanks, gahurts!

I am not too far from Chattanooga.

I just finished posting in F&G a bit more serious (and possibly paranoid) question..

Is there ever any concern about people with negative agendas when meeting IRL and forever letting go of the 'anonymous' filter?

I don't have any questions (yet lol) but I also want to express my gratitude for this site and the staff that maintains it.

I'm not aware of any issues. We keep the locations and specifics private and only communicate those through PM's and e-mails. A lot of people choose not to have pictures taken of them and we have even kept some people's attendence secret from the boards if they didn't want it known that they were there.

I can say that there is not a single SIer that I have met IRL that I do not consider a friend.

Re: dropping anonymity for g2gs, I have had a few very new members express interest in the DC ones I've hosted, and I have both asked the mods if they had any concerns, and I've sent some time chatting with the new member to get to know them before giving them any info - amazing how quickly people can drop off when you ask them simple things about themselves and in one case it led to a great conversation with someone who is still on the site actively (but ultimately couldn't make the g2g).

I have a question for the mods (probably MH): I for one am LOVING the new premium features; how many members have upgraded to each level?

After speaking to MH, we thought it may be a bit too intrusive to those that have upgraded if we publicly gave out that information

I always wondered if someone went to a G2G and ran into someone they actually knew IRL but didnt realize they were both on SI?

If so, how did it turn out?

That's always a small fear of mine when we host them... can't pretend you walked into the wrong party if you live there.

I don't *think* that has happened, although it's entirely possible.

The closest it came for us was years ago at a g2g in Austin, turns out one of the BS's and her WS live literally 1 mile behind us

When we had our g2g when we lived in NY, an attendee was talking about another member who he was friends with who might come. I didn't know her because she spent most of her time in NB and D/S and I didn't read there (it was before I was a mod).

Turned out she lived about 10 miles from us and worked where LD and I used to frequent.

She never wound up coming because she had to work, but I wondered if I would have recognized her had she attended.

It was a very strange 'oh no my worlds are about to collide' feeling.

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

While I have not met someone by surprise, I did have a "it's a small world" connection. I live and work in Kentucky and I was in New Mexico having dinner with several members and one of the members kids and her mother. Come to find out the I was hired for my job by this mother's cousin.

On a different odd coincidence, two of the three times I've run into NoWay were away from either of our home cities and by coincidence total coincidence.

There was another g2g where two members grew up a few blocks from each other and had a couple mutual friends growing up.

Not exactly this, but...

Last year, I noticed a member's tagline included a quote from Harold Warp. Now, Harold Warp is not exactly a household name, but he is known to people who have been to a place called Pioneer Village - a "tourist spot" and "museum" just north of nowhere in Nebraska. PV was Harold's creation, and his quotes are immortalized on the walls of each building in PV.

So I PM'ed the member (better4me - hi, honey!) and told her I had done time at PV as a kid and wondered if she had as well. We struck up a conversation that led us to discover in short order that we were from the same home town. Graduated from the same high school just a few years apart. In fact, she graduated with my sister, who she was now Facebook friends with.

Shortly after that exchange, we both were attending the St. Louis g2g, so she picked me up on her way there, and we spent the entire four hour drive yakking it up nonstop like instant long-lost friends.

So awesome.
