I am not a professional photographer, and have no aspirations to be one. I took some photography classes when I was younger, and was told I have a knack for it, and it was something I enjoyed doing... but I ended up giving up that hobby (long story).

My company has a "reward points" system, and you can shop in a catalog for items when you accumulate points. I finally have enough points to get something meaningful and I decided to get a Nikon D3200 D-SLR camera and get back into my photography hobby.

I've owned SLRs in the past, but this is my first digital one. The camera is costing me nothing, but I am thinking about purchasing a lens if I can find an affordable one.

My primary uses would be shooting youth/high school sports, concerts (mainly outdoors) and nature/animals.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good quality but affordable lens?

Does it come with any lens at all? I've found the base 18-55MM lens to be very useful.

From what you're saying about your use, you're going to want a bigger telephoto lens. I went with a 55-200 due to price. I still have a 70-300 from my old film Nikon, so I have that as a backup.

Because it's a crop camera, the 35 1.8 lens is really, really good and not real expensive.

I would suggest getting Bryan Peterson's book 'Understanding Photography'. That will give you a very good head start.

Oh, and that whole 'costing you nothing'...you'll laugh at that later when you've spent a zillion dollars on camera stuff.

It comes with a kit lens - a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom.

wifehadfive, I was thinking of getting the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom as it is relatively inexpensive and will give me some additional versatility...

NotDefeatedYet, I am prepared for this to turn into an expensive hobby over time...

Those are the two lenses I was referring too. I was too lazy to get up and look in the camera bag

I have a DSLR from a different manufacturer and those lenses are the ones I use the most. They worked well for what I was shooting: sporting events, band competitions, theatre productions, kid stuff in general.

Enjoy.
