I'm not cool enough for a smartphone. Okay, it's not that I'm not cool enough, it's that I don't want to pay $100/ month to add a data plan to my current phone bill.
However, I would like a mobile device that I can use to play all my games on (i.e. Candy Crush, Words with Friends, etc). I was thinking about getting a tablet for this purpose, but my question is, do I need a data package to use apps on my tablet, or will a Wi-Fi connection suffice?
Anybody know the answer to this? Thanks in advance!

I do not have my tablet hooked up to cell service. It uses Wi-fi only. It means it is not portable when streaming video but it works just fine for game apps that you don't have to be constantly connected for.

It depends on where you want to use it. If you're in a place with wifi, great, but you won't be able to use it in the car, on a plane (unless they have wifi-like Southwest), any place where there is no wifi.
