They make several kinds of Uggs. The ones you see on most of the younger kids would not do well in the snow/rain. But they make kinds that are great for snow and rain. I own 3 pairs of Uggs and 1 knock off pair. The first pair I bought are probably 13 years old and they are still my go to pair when I have to run around in the cold rain. The others are more stylish and taller. Go to the Uggs site, you can see all the styles they make. For functional boots that keep your feet warm and dry I would not pick any other kind. One of my girl friends has a pair that are like biker boots, laces up the back. I have lusted after those for 3 years. Have yet to see another pair of those.

I know that the Uggs that you first think of, suede, bulky were/are very popular with the surfers. Come out the ocean and you can put those on without socks and be very comfy.

Anyway, I am an Ugg fan for years.

Please do not purchase Uggs.

At least not until you do some research about the practices involved in creating/manufacturing their boots. They practice exceptional acts of cruelty upon sheep in order to obtain their shearling materials; these cruel methods are not necessary, they are just less expensive (aka, more profitable) for the company.

There are numerous alternatives that provide the same feel, look, and warmth using less cruel and even synthetic materials. And best yet, they are far less expensive!

Ugg boots (also known as uggs) are a type of fleece-lined sheepskin boot which originated in Australia and/or New Zealand. Today the term "ugg" both generically refers to that type of boot and specifically to particular trademarked brands of boots (most prominently the UGG brand manufactured by the Deckers Outdoor Corporation of California).

Ugg boots are typically made from sheepskin with attached fleece (rather than wool attached to a synthetic base), a raw material derived from sheep that have been killed and skinned rather than simply sheared of their coats. In recent years various celebrities and animal rights groups have urged boycotts of ugg boots, calling upon manufacturers and consumers to instead choose boots made from synthetic materials rather than animal products.

My younger brother had a pair, I inherited them in 1984 when he grew out of them. My daughter started wearing them in 2005. Didn't look any older and I think she still has them. Last time I was home I was told that an american company had bought them and they weren't the same. The insides didn't look like they used to, but I think there is another brand from Australia that is good too.

There are a TON of alternatives to UGGs/Bearpaws without the cruelty - check this list out for some beautiful, faux, ugg style options. Save your money and buy 2 pairs for the price of UGGs and never worry about the suede staining, falling apart or the heel losing it's shape. And If you want a work boot, a hard-core winter boot, then you need to look at Sorel's. Trust the Canadian http://www.empathyforanimals.org/the-search-for-vegan-boots-solved/
