I have heard, from a friend who went through mediation first, that mediation does not work if there is any chance that there are hidden accounts. Also, that mediation, didn't work for her, because she was bullied during the process by her x. She is now using an attorney. I retained my lawyer for $3k yesterday, paid for her out of the joint account. She recommended that the x pay out for his attorney out of the joint account too. (Assuming there is that kind of money in the joint account, of course.) Good luck, this is tough stuff.

On to a new life.

Retainers in my area are 3500-5000 so your 3000 is probably about right.

There was a thread here a while ago with the poster asking how do we all afford/pay for attorneys. There were a lot of different answers ~ maybe you could look for that thread.

Dmari, I was going to post this ^^^^^ exact question! So if anyone finds it bump it! My consults with lawyers said I need a PI before filing.....$2000 retainer, cha-ching; and after filing forensic CPA, cha-ching, and his business valued, cha-ching!
