My darling hubby has moderate hearing loss in one ear and severe loss in the other.

He also suffers from tinnitus with a high pitched ringing in both ears.

Our alarm clock has become very difficult for him to hear. He's slept through his alarm twice in the last month, making him late for work.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a moderately priced alarm clock for the hearing impaired? I'd like to get something for him that's loud enough for him, but won't wake up my kids in the bedrooms next to us.

I saw a number of clocks on Amazon, but they have mixed reviews. The vibrating ones look interesting, but again...mixed reviews.

Do any of you have any experience that you can share?

Thanks!

Will light wake him? In dorms for the hearing impaired all alarms are light based. I am guessing there is something out there that either has a light or will turn on your lights.

Maybe put a timer on a bedside light?

That's a really good idea, Pentup!

We have a few timers that we use for our Christmas lights. I'll definitely give this a try as well.

Thanks!

You might want to look into a way to vibrate the bed as well. My dorm mate, who was deaf, had something like this:

It looks like there is a wristband version as well.

I really like that vibrating wristband option.

It means waking him up, but letting me have my extra 30-60 minutes of sleep as well.

Thanks! I'm willing to try both at this point!

Any chance he's also a fitness junkie? A lot of the wristband style pedometers (fitbit, jawbone, etc.) have built in vibrating alarms. Some of them even track your sleep cycle and wake you at a natural waking point, so you don't interrupt a sleep cycle and thus feel more rested.

Of course, they run $100-150, so you'd really only want to go that route if you also wanted the fitness features and it were going to be a multi-purpose purchase.

I was just going to suggest the FitBit. Mr. T uses his as his alarm clock. It's the first time in umpty-teen years he's woken up smoothly and happy, too! I commented on it and he said it's nice not having a loud thing beeping next to your head as you try to wake up.

As his bedmate, I have to agree.

Thanks Ama and Thren.

Hubby is definitely not a fitness guy.

We kayak and walk the dogs, but he doesn't hit the weights or jog.

We took a look at some of the vibrating alarm clocks and ordered a Sonic Boom from Amazon.

He's also going to hookup the timer on the lights this weekend when he has a moment or two.

Wish us luck!

Late to the party, but if the one you ordered doesn't fit your needs, my mom got this one and it is awesome. It has a light/alarm combo that works really well for people who need more than an alarm.

My daughter has an iPhone clock that charges her phone, etc., and has a shaker alarm that she puts under her pillow. It wasn't every expensive. She is totally deaf in her left ear. She is, however, also a teenager so for some reason the alarm only works on days she has something she wants to do, not on days she has to get up at 5:00 for Jazz Band.
