I took DD to see Frozen this weekend. As I sat there watching the whirlwind romance between Princess Anna and Prince Hans, I was thinking "Red flags. Red flags!" It wasn't really an A situation, but it sure made me think of the various ones I've witnessed IRL and through SI.

They sing a song about how perfectly suited they are...after one day.

"We finish each other's..."

"...sandwiches."

"I was going to say that!"

I thought to myself "mirroring". Such an AP attitude...

They shared how their siblings froze them out. I thought, "FOO issues".

Hans said something like "I have a crazy question to ask you. Will you marry me?" Anna replied, "I have a crazy answer. Yes."

I thought about how it's a red flag to push commitment early in a relationship. It usually points to personality disorders or at the least emotional issues that haven't been dealt with. Like how MrH wanted us to get engaged within months of our first date. I put him off by agreeing to a promise ring.

I told myself I see red flags, Disney will Disneyfi it. I made a mental note to talk to DD about the situation Thankfully they didn't. It did turn out that the guy with the red flags was bad news. It naturally led to a discussion rather than me having to bring it up.

Then there's the whole scene with the trolls where the guy that helped Anna out is told the engagement is just a thing...they don't see a ring. I didn't touch that as it wasn't part of the bigger picture and we have years for that attitude to come to the forefront.

I really enjoyed the movie, even more because it led to a talk with DD about what to look for in my partner, what are some red flags and how we can't truly know someone in a very short period of time.

"Being in love" first moved them to promise fidelity: this quieter love enables them to keep the promise. *CS Lewis*

Her quote "engagement" is a flex arrangement - plus I don't see no ring!

(No, I wasn't listening to the Frozen soundtrack on the treadmill at lunch . . . )

I liked that Hans turned out not to be Prince Charming - but it did kind of irk me that Anna and Kristoff ended up falling in love after basically one day - which is pretty much what Anna was criticized by both Elsa and Kristoff for doing with Hans . . .but . . .whatever . . . I loved the movie.

My daughter was a little confused by the whole Hans thing. Good guys and bad guys, she understands, but she gets confused when bad guys pretend to be nice (like Hans, or Ursula in Little Mermaid when she's tricking Ariel) . . . wouldn't it be easier if people were honest about who they are?

The sandwiches line was actually in Arrested Development. Only know that because we finally got around to watching it recently.

I honestly felt blindsided by it even though it did hit all those bells. I was expecting there to be some kind of garbage like Anna deciding the Reindeer Guy was really The One and leaving Prince Fuckadoo standing around with his dick in hand, but then his magical penis would warm the heart of the Snow Queen. Or her cooter. Or something I dunno.

It was a really good display of how people see what they want to see, or what they expect to see, right up until the moment of truth. Then they're freezing to death with no hope of magical penising in sight.

I had to work really hard not to shout "FUCK YOU HANS! FUCK YOU AND YOUR PRIMOGENITURE ENVY YOU PIECE OF SHIT!" in the middle of a theater full of little kids but I managed it.

eta:

She didn't fall in love with Reindeer Dude after a day, she spent weeks wandering around with him. Anyway we don't know if it was TROO LURV cuz he didn't unfreeze her icy iciness.

Yeah, true love was the sisters...the guys didn't even factor in.

The sandwich line has also been in Raising Hope. I knew it sounded familiar.

How they twisted the romance did surprise me a bit.

Jana- your DD is a little young, but as she gets older this kind of stuff makes great talking points and teachable moments. I used to dread the whole fairy tale idea, thinking DD would grow up believing in that. But I find that just like Santa, I don't want to steal it from her either.

So, just like we found a way to explain Santa in a way that keeps magic and our faith, I watch her enjoy fairy tales but then we discuss the things in them that trip up the characters.

What I thought was a movie that would leave mama digging her out of dreams that could bring her harm instead became a really good tool for talking about relationships.

Any other movies or shows that have helped you guys talk to your kids to prepare them for relationships?

I really liked the movie. I kind of thought it was a milestone of sorts for me, because I saw it with my wife and son and laughed consistently at most parts, including the troll song, which I'd probably have flipped out about 6 months ago. I thought it was really funny when the song switched to "UH....SHE's a fixer-upper..."

I kept waiting for the snowman to say "Don't forget to bring a towel" though.

Was Olaf voiced by Towelie???

I guess I didn't pick up on the fact that it was supposed to have been a long time that they were wandering around in the snow. I think I was still drunk off Idina Menzel's voice.

Sorry for the t/j Holly! I just really loved Frozen. DH, DD, my BIL, my 13 yo nephew, and I all saw it together and loved it. Baby Green and I went together again last week and I cried like a fool for the first 20 minutes.
