How do I know this?
Because they are screaming like banshee's in our yard each night.
Why?
Because
A. We live in the boonies, so it's like call of the wild here and
B. We raise poultry (chicken, turkeys, guinea, quail) and we naturally attract wildlife for dinner.
If you've truly never hear "What does the fox say? Youtube gives some great samples of a Vixen fox call. Sounds like someone being brutally murdered.

Freaked me out the first time I ever heard it. Sounds exactly like you said - like someone being brutally murdered. Still gives me chills, 30 years after hearing it for the first time!
