At the time my marriage burst in 2008, I was on my way to becoming a professional photographer - something I wanted to be when I was younger (I am 46) but was talked out of it by family, something I have always regretted. My EXH was making great money to support me. Fast forward to 2012, and as a professional photographer living on alimony that dried up in 2013, I also was given a huge opportunity to write for my local newspaper despite not having a journalism degree - something I have totally excelled at and gives me joy.
Here is where I need your opinion SI:
1. Is a career in photography dead? If no, please help me with ideas as to how I can make a living at it now. My photography strengths are portraits, events, product photography and frameable art photography (ie landscapes, architecture etc.)
2. Is a career in journalism dead? If no, help me on this, too.
Thank you.

I have no idea of either of them are dead. I know that we did an install for a photographer and he belonged to a photographer's group in his city (it was out of our town) that basically were price colluding (the same thing that got ebook publishers sued, if your followed that). I don't think it is dead, I think it has changed formats. Look at all of those cute shots on Pinterest that people post. No way I could get leaves to fall that way with the light just right, etc.
As for journalism, it has changed, but the blog world is alive and well. Blogs are basically op ed pages of papers of the past.
If you have the opportunity to do any of these things to bring in money for your family, I say go for it. It sounds like a passion, so you should explore this avenue.

A friend of mine has always been interested in photography. She's a kindergarten teacher and was doing photos for friends as a hobby. Last year she opened her studio, she still teaches and does this because she loves it! She's always busy on the weekend doing weddings or family photo shoots.
I don't think it's dead, but it has and is changing.
I trust you is a better compliment than I love you, because you may not trust the person you love, but you can always love the person you trust. - UnknownRelationships are like sharing a book, it doesn't work if you're not on the same page.
