Has it changed this year? It doesn't seem as user friendly. It used to have on line "chats" available if you had a question, I don't see that, just the usual online help, similar to Microsoft Office. Also, I thought it used to first ask you some basic questions: Any major life changes ~ married/divorced/had children/sold a property . . . none of that.

I sold my house last year and paid the bank 3 years worth of back real estate taxes. I did not claim the taxes in the year they were due because I had not paid them. So last year was a pretty hefty chuck of change in taxes. However, while everything else pretty much stayed the same, my refund is practically the same. How is that possible? Also, as I cannot find the tax form they sent me, I am trying to import it and there doesn't seem to be a link.

Most importantly, I shelled out $9,000 in my son's college tuition from sale of house. Can I deduct that somewhere?

Try contacting them here:

The wait times are probably horrendous today.

Turbo Tax changes each year because the tax laws change each year. Support should be able to answer all of your questions.

I have used TT for years and I didn't really see a difference - but then, I didn't really have any major changes. Are you sure you clicked the "walk me through" it button and not the "I will choose what to work on myself?"

You should have gotten a form from the college - can't remember the form # at the moment - that gave you what is needed to claim the tuition. Is he still a dependent of yours? That makes a huge diff too. If he is not a dependent, then you can't claim the tuition.

At this point it may be safer to file for an extension if you have questions as to whether your return is correct/complete? You can always amend, too.

Good luck! Death & taxes - both suck!

I need a better system!

I used to do taxes. Since it runs by the calendar year, I used to tell people to figure their receipts in June and December. That way you're ready whew the w-2's are mailed. A friend told me once to get a zip lock bag, label it, and stick it in the junk drawer. Every time you get a receipt, stick it in the bag. The plastic protects it so that it doesn't get damages and you can still read it at tax time.
