I don't do mason jar salads, but I do have something that fits into the top of a mason jar and makes the jar into a split level container. My partner takes it to work every day, granola in the bottom and yoghurt in the top. He hasn't broken one yet and it literally just gets tossed into his bag, no special treatment! Just thought I'd chime in on the breakage issue!

I got a really big jar, more like a canister, and did these for awhile. It only took a few minutes in the morning after breakfast to put the salad together. Yummy.
Keep the greens separate until you put it together. I use romaine rinsed and kept in a baggie with a paper towel.
Romaine keeps forever if you keep it on the stem.
I found it to be super filling and very delicious. But a bit sloppy, so carry a large cloth napkin to drape over your lap...
