We have wild chickens all over our property. The fresh eggs are delicious and I love when there are little peeps running around but the roosters drive me nuts. They start crowing around midnight and basically go off every 2 hours all night long. They crow all day too but I can live with that. You can actually hear the roosters from other farms crowing and listen as they get closer and closer until it is our farms turn. They are beautiful but noisy!

Oh have fun! Our neighbors are an elderly couple that have 8 chickens with no rooster, and the hens each lay about 1 egg a day, so they pass a dozen HUGE eggs to us every week or so. We love it! The yolks are so orange, our omelets are nearly sunset orange. And I'm glad they don't have a rooster. They've had the same 8 chickens for a year now and no need or time to hatch out babies as far as they've told me, so no need for the rooster.
The chickens are free range and they come into our yard and eat all the ticks. At least I hope they do. And the worms and sometimes a chipmunk! I never knew they were predators, but they looooove mice and other rodents. Ewww!
The bad is that they dig in my garden all the time and poop on my deck. And they can dig some serious holes! But I consider that the price I pay for tick control and all the eggs we're given. I feel like I've had an entire chicken education in the last year, watching "the ladies" - I call them that too!
We have hawks and coyotes in the woods behind our house and I've seen that when the chickens sense a hawk is around, they hide under a bush and squawk. So far no fatalities. I think I'd be scarred for life to see one taken by another bird.
Have fun with the coop and the chickens! Take pics and post them!
