Has anyone had this done as an adult?

I was born tongue-tied. My mom swears that they clipped it when I was a baby, but if they did, it either grew back (not sure if that's even possible) or they didn't snip it enough because I have had a very tight tongue-tie all this time.

It never really posed any of the normally associated problems for me.

My speech is fine, other than stumbling over words sometimes if I am talking fast. And not being able to roll my Rs. But I never had to go to speech therapy like many kids with a tongue-tie did.

The worst thing for me was when I went to the doctor or dentist and they asked me to lift my tongue and I couldn't do it. So little things like looking at my throat if I was sick became complicated because I couldn't move my tongue out of the way.

Then as I got older, I was always a little self-conscious about it when being "intimate" with men. It always ended up being no big deal but it always felt like I was a little bit of a circus freak show when a guy realized I couldn't stick my tongue out all the way... Never had any complaints, but it was still cause me some anxiety thinking about being with someone new and having them "discover" this about me and wondering if this was the guy that was going to claim I wasn't "good enough" doing certain things.

Then last month when I was at my regular dentist for my routine cleaning, we were talking about it because they noticed some recession in my gums just behind my front bottom teeth and they said that sometimes that can be related to being tongue-tied because of the way your tongue sits in your mouth when you have limited mobility.

So after some research online and a consultation with an oral surgeon, off I went this morning to have this done...

The procedure itself was not bad at all - but my anxiety was through the roof. He did it with a laser and from the time they shot me up with novacaine to being done it was literally less than 5 minutes.

Immediately following the procedure I felt very, very weird. He said I wasn't swelling or bleeding at all, but I felt like my tongue was swollen and it was a very odd sensation. My speech is very badly slurred.

I am home now and go back in 2 weeks for a follow-up. The novacaine is wearing off but my speech still is messed up. He said this is a very minor, routine procedure and other than a little soreness I'll be just fine in a few days. I am nervous about my speech going back to normal and wonder if I will have to re-learn how to say certain things with increased movement of my tongue.

Anyone else have this done as an adult and want to share your experience?

Hugs!

I haven't had this done but I'll tell you it will be awhile before your speech becomes normal as your tongue muscles will have to relearn speech.

It's the same when people get braces or oral appliances. Your brain will make the adjustments as it heard your speech. It should only take a couple of weeks to adjust.

Thanks Dr. PJ!

My speech is much better now that the novacaine wore off and I took 2 ibuprofen and mostly feel good except if I try to move my tongue a lot...
