In a conversation this morning with my new counselor it finally dawned on me how this works. When you get on an airplane, you are instructed to put your own mask on first, then help the kid next to you. First responders are trained to evaluate the scene before rushing in to help. Aid workers feed themselves first thing in the morning. If I do not take care of myself first, I risk making the situation worse instead of better. I'm not going to ignore the kid who needs help with the oxygen mask; I'm not going to flee the scene and leave the casualty laid out under the power pole; I'm not going to eat all the food and let the people starve. I am going to take care of myself so that I can take care of him.
