I used this to have all messages between myself and ex for court. It's easier then scrolling forever and screen shotting.
Click at the top right of any Facebook page and select Settings
Click Download a copy of your Facebook data at the bottom of General Account Settings
Click Start My Archive
Because this download contains your profile information, you should keep it secure and be careful when storing, sending or uploading it to any other services.

When I downloaded mine it showed EVERYHING from ages ago even. When I downloaded his it only showed conversations between us which is not complete at all. So I'm nos sure.

Couple of things to mention:
-You do have to have the password to the FB account (you can't just sneakily do it if they forget to logout). It asks you to verify the password before it will let you download.
-You have to have access to the email account associated with the FB account, because that's where it sends the download. I didn't see any option to send the download anywhere else.
I just tried it on my WH's account and I'm kind of bummed because he's going to see the email.

Unless it has changed, when I did this a couple years ago, deleted messages did not show up

You can change the mail. However if they use a cell you can't chnage it back to the cell. This was irrelevant to me because he's an idiot and will never look at it so I created a gmail account just for this use.
