so I didn't want to spend the money
If I asked you to put a $ price on having your M what would it be. More or less? Equally, broken things cost $$ to fix. This will be no different. Because a M is a valuable thing, they really expensive to fix, even if you walk away.
But maybe I should just do it and provide him the results and see what he says then.
Not quite... First, timeline with facts (so, no PA as I read it) with dates and as much evidence as you have. Poly with him, OR a family member or friend he will trust when they say, "I was there, I heard the questions and she passed. It was not a PA, she had the exBF lie..."
THEN proactively present him the evidence and support. He will either open or begin to, towards believing you, or not. However, IMO, you will have done all you can in this regard.
