Following on from SMS thread about who do we tell... Cristiano Ronaldo (one of the top 2 football players on the planet, I rate Lionel Messi above him) was accused of raping a woman in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009. A story recently came out in Der Spiegel (a German newspaper) about this.
In this case though, there appears to be a 'smoking gun', where even though CR is denying the accusations now in public, he had apparently admitted to his lawyer that he knew she was saying no.

I think her story is compelling, and in this case there seems to be something that so many assaults/rapes lack: the rapist admitting it.

I knew nothing about this until I opened SI but having quickly skimmed the article his responses are really upsetting. I'm not sure I can read the Deadspin article yet.

Cases being paid off is how predators are allowed to reoffend. It's what happened with Saville and doubtless countless other celebrities/people who can afford not to go to court, not get a record, not be put on a register. It's how red flags are missed.
I'm in no way suggesting that victim/survivors should have to go public, what they have been through is enough but it does highlight how easily people in certain circles can just pick up and carry on without consequence (I don't consider a financial pay out to be any kind of consequence to an athlete of his stature, he won't even notice the money leaving his account).
I'm shocked that this went unreported. Sadly, I'm not shocked at the responses of the Daily Mail and similar rags.
looking for another "payday." is one of their favourite battle-cries.
