My son lives in Meridian, Idaho, a suburb of Boise. It's very nice, clean, low crime. Houses are not extremely expensive like here in California. The weather is pleasant except for winter (Dec, Jan, Feb). They get snow but not a lot. It is a conservative state.
Hopefully, you will find a place that feels right to you.
You can apologize over and over, but if your actions don't change, your words become meaningless.

I recently moved to a different state. My choice was due to various reasons that I weighed back and forth (I am a Libra- nuff said). I put serious consideration into the taxes on pension & retirement income and property taxes. That whole death & taxes issue 
Road of life is paved with dead squirrels who couldn't make a decision.
