Having had a session with our couple’s counselor, I believe that the coping mechanisms that I adopted as ways to cope with the traumas in my childhood are partly responsible for the pain and hurt that I have done to BS. I have a session with my own counselor on Friday, but I am open to an ideas on how to combat 30-35 yr old demons and thinking errors. How do I put to rest my inner child, stop playing adult, and start being one for real?

Please share exactly what you've written with your counselor. I will be marking 7 years with my therapist this Nov and those early weekly sessions were horrible. Having to face those childhood traumas again was worse than getting shot at (combat veteran).
If your counselor is worth their salt, they will know exactly how to guide you through and show you healthy ways to deal with them. The good news is by confronting this shit now, they will eventually lose their power over you. You'll find yourself automatically responding to various life situations much differently than you used to. I wish you nothing but healing moving forward.
