No amusing anecdotes

No weirder experience

No junk plaster casting...

But I am going to take my son backpacking this weekend. Thunderstorms and a high of 43 is the forecast...

Wish me luck.

You sir, are a braver man than me.

BrainFreeze posted 10/19/2018 15:20 PM

We have been promising him a backpacking trip all summer... and he got a job... so things got a little dicey with timing...

I'm making good on that promise.

In 2 years both my kids will be away at college and they won't ask me to go anymore... so I gotta take my opportunities while I still have them.

I might bring a little whisky to warm up with LOL...

Zigin posted 10/19/2018 21:09 PM

Yeah I am glad those days are past me.

What is in the fridge ? Trying to figure out my what do pick up on the way home . . .beer . . .scotch . . .both ? Vodka Martinis and watch James Bond movies ? IDK.

So this evening I had a choice of cider, wine or a cocktail. Wine won, but it was a close call, based mostly on which beverage would require the least work followed by which would be most harmed by ice.

A few more crazy WW interactions and I'm ready for bed. Tomorrow is a new day...

sisoon posted 10/20/2018 12:04 PM

You mean vodka and vermouth, right? A martini needs gin. Just sayin'....

You keep scotch in the fridge? And I guess you could call it a 'vodka martini.'

Cuts to staff & benefits? That IS a bummer. The only things I can say are: 1) Now is the best time to be cut in decades, so your staff has hope, and 2) unless this is truly temporary, you've polished your resume and connected with your network, right?

Man, I hated cutting staff. Luckily - I only had to do it once, and I only had to make a recommendation. The thing was, I heard who my boss was going to cut, and I thought he chose the wrong guy, so I spoke up.

In the end, da bosses cut out the whole data center, so I didn't have any impact on the cuts anyway. (Some of us were offered transfers. I took the offer.)

This is why you always need a flask. None of those options would have worked, so into the flask we go. I even carry it to my favorite hangout as they donít serve liquor...only craft beer. As a member I get 2 beers per day, then I break into the flask of bourbon.

Cuts to staff and benefits sucks. Worked for a $10B company that filed Chapter 11 and then everything was cut. Hang tough...lots of jobs out there.

I have a "partscaster" Tele that I put together a couple of years ago. At the time I made it, I put in Seymour Duncan "hot stack" Tele set. Never really liked those PU's. Very generic sounding. My wife got me a set of Fralins as an early Christmas gift. Got them soldered in last Friday. Been playing it all weekend. Fuckinay.

numb&dumb posted 10/23/2018 14:33 PM

Sisoon . . .you know I couldn't let this go, right ?

You mean vodka and vermouth, right? A martini needs gin. Just sayin'...

For shame. For shame. Perfect dry Vodka martini, you just pass the open bottle over the top of the shaker (be careful not to let any fall in). Shake with ice. Add at least 3 big green olives. (I love olives BTW). That is a perfect martini to me. That is a License to chill. Anyone ?

Gin martini ? What is next pumpkin flavored beer ?Gin should only be mixed with tonic water, limes. And only while golfing at a swanky establishment and only then just to fit in.

numb&dumb posted 10/23/2018 14:35 PM

Also thanks to everyone for the well wishes on the job front. I spent the better part of the last year disassembling a team I build over a long period. I will be OK. I survived worse.

WornDown posted 10/23/2018 15:50 PM

Hitchcock, Churchill, Hemingway, QEII and FDR (among others) would tell you you are wrong about gin vs vodka, N&D. Martinis need to be made with gin.

Except for the vermouth part.

Hitchcock said to use gin=n and glance across the room at the vermouth. Churchill said to just use ice cold gin and bow in the direction of France.

Oh, and if you want a (real) great G&T, use Hendrick's Gin, tonic and add a cucumber slice. Yum!

Thanks, WD. James Bond, too, IIRC. That's James Bond on the page. The movie makers had their heads up....

Oh, there are so many good gins! One of the coolest is from the FEW (Frances E Willard) distillery. Its name honors the founder of the WCTU, the HQ of which is a couple of miles down the street from the distillery.

Don't get me wrong, N&D, vodka with 'vermouth' whispered over the lip(?) of the glass isn't a bad drink. It just shouldn't be called a 'martini.' And you can even call it a 'martini' if you don't mind being wrong.

Call me when the fisticuffs begin.

Butforthegrace posted 10/24/2018 05:26 AM

A martini is made with gin. That's why, when one wants some vodka in drag, one must use the modifier "vodka martini" whilst ordering. Because without the modifier, the request for a "martini" to a bartender will yield a drink made with gin.

Struggling lately. Next month is 11 yrs. Next year is 50. She is in AA, 160+-days sober. Kids surly teens, one out of school now. I got some itch some yearn some regret some uneasiness I cant explain. Feel stuck feel old feel stupid.
Year ago I picked up her phone to respond to a fam member, "Joe"(his real f*cking name!) was up at the top of messages. She had taken a clothed se!fie in the bathroom and sent to this guy. Said she missed their weekly talks. I Got the teary eyed apology how stupid she was yada yada. I know, once a chewter
Ive tried. Got over the anger finally. Had stupid thoughts of renewing vows, it had been nearly 10 yrs ago, then that shit.
We get a!ong but I just dont feel it.

WornDown posted 10/25/2018 07:08 AM

James Bond, too, IIRC

Actually, Ian Flemming had Bond's martini's with vodka - back in the 50s vodka wasn't really known - so it was "exotic" - and add in the fact that it was "Russian," well...perfect for a British super spy.

[Honestly, gin is just flavored vodka, but I digress....]

steadychevy posted 10/25/2018 08:40 AM

That must have been a shock and caused deep hurt, 64fleet. You think you're in the clear and might even make it and then get hit again. I don't understand the mentality. Nothing learned? Changes not made? Just white knuckled it? Sorry you got hit again.

WornDown posted 10/25/2018 10:49 AM

64 -

After that long she sends a pic and the excuse was missed him? Ouch.

So sorry to hear that.

numb&dumb posted 10/25/2018 11:14 AM

Sorry 64. Anything she could do differently this time ? Or are you going to agree to continue with this misery? Nothing wrong with calling in like you see them either.

I think you get before it might have felt 80-20, but you have proof it is 100-0.

As far as Gin Martini goes . . . I am going to play my gen X card one more time. I was born after the first James Bond movie was out . . .culturally speaking. Plus "pine tree" isn't one of favorite flavors.

Butforthegrace posted 10/25/2018 12:04 PM

Correct. And when he asked for a drink, Bond specified "vodka martini, shaken, not stirred."

Because if he had not specified "vodka", he would have said, "martini, shaken, not stirred." And his drink would have been made with gin.

sisoon posted 10/25/2018 12:48 PM

Very sorry, 64

*****************

From Casino Royale:

'A dry Martini,' he said. 'One. In a deep champagne
goblet.'

'Oui, Monsieur.'

'Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of
vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well
until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-
peel. Got it?'

Later in the book Fleming writes:

'I think it's a fine name,' said Bond. An idea struck
him. 'Can I borrow it? ? He explained about the special
Martini he had invented and his search for a name for it.
'The Vesper,' he said. 'It sounds perfect and it's very
appropriate to the violet hour when my cocktail will
now be drunk all over the world. Can I have it? '

I just realized Fleming didn't identify the brand of vodka ... so much else about JB is branded. You'd almost think that the vodka is meaningless, since no brand is specified, but maybe I'm reading too much into that.

Gin is an acquired taste, n&d. It's worth acquiring, at least IMO - and I don't drink more than 12 oz of booze a year. (W falls asleep if she whiffs alcohol, and I don't like to drink alone.)
