Drug Question

TheCaterpillar posted 12/1/2019 09:13 AM

What's the risk of accidental exposure from skin contact? There's a lot of misinformation out there about accidentally being exposed because you held the hand of someone who was high or whether your dog could get high from touch etc.

I read some convincing articles that this is a risk with fentanyl as the legitimate use of it in hospital with cancer patients was as patches and lollypops because very ill patients might have stomach issues.

What about LSD? I'm pretty sure that's not how it works but my friends were so convinced.

Any scientists/medics/smart informed people have a take?

I'm not an expert, but this does not sound likely to me. The drug will get to the bloodstream, but how much will leach out through the skin would be minimal. Hopefully others with more expertise than I will offer sound advice on this. Interesting question!

Depends on the medication/drug and its form.

And your own sensitivity or allergic reaction.

I knew a nurse who lost her dream job (pediatric oncology) when she administered a chemo drug to a patient while gloved, and still reacted so badly she went into anaphylactic shock.

But I imagine such cases are very rare.

It's definitely possible but not probable. Your skin is a wonderful organ and it's generally designed to prevent things like this from happening. That is, your skin is a wonderful barrier to keep stuff in and to keep stuff out.

However, I remember from way-back-when when Barry Bonds was doing steroids... he took two different ones, known as "the cream" and "the clear". The cream was literally a cream that you rubbed into your skin.

There is also a neurotoxin called VX that can kill you with a single drop on your skin.

Similarly, I can't imagine that a person using a drug could secrete enough through their skin to get someone else high.

As far as LSD, I found what appears to be a legitimate article that explicitly states that it cannot be absorbed through the skin. (How LSD Works, HowStuffWorks). There appears to be some misinformation because the guy who first synthesized it in the lab tripped on it, he assumed via skin absorption but this was later shown to not be possible (so they assumed he touch his mouth with his fingers).

Again it depends on the form.

I took care of two kids when I was an ICU nurse that had used "stamps" of a hallucinogen. They were covered head to toe w/ these things, and they were out of their minds for quite some time due to it. We got them in and scrubbed them down, but at that time the drug had been absorbed, and we just provided supportive care until it wore it off. It was entertaining as hell.

The thing w/ Fentanyl if the patches come in contact w/ your skin yes it will get you. If the medication is in pill or injectable form it is less likely, however injectable Fent comes in glass ampules, and I did work w/ a nurse that had one shatter when she went to pop it, and got some Fent into the cut, and she had to go to the ED as it was a "work comp" issue. She was monitored for a while and then her H had to come get her. It is my understanding that when the pills are crushed and mixed with liquid you can absorb some through skin as well. That is why there have been incidents of cops being exposed, and needing to go to the hospital.

Basically I had 2 friends over. Their 2 friends showed up, which I would be fine wth were it not for the fact that they had clearly taken something. I still don't know for sure what (they know I don't do that so it was very much a "don't tell Caterpillar" situation).

I don't like being around high people. It makes me uncomfortable. My friends clearly didn't know their friends were high when they invited them over and they were pretty uncomfortable to and offered to leave but I a) didn't want to be rude and b) didn't want anyone driving under the influence so we made chit chat for a while and eventually got them ubered home.

I felt really put on the spot but there were whispers of "Don't keep petting her dog, what happens to a dog when they fry?". I just felt so uncomfortable wth them being in my home that I didn't even want to talk to them. THey weren't fit to drive but weren't so out of it that I felt bad sending them home.

THe behaviour of these people made me think it was a hallucinogen of some kind and it didn't match my experience with stoners.

Yes, I'm a sheltered little square who doesn't want that kind of 'fun' around me
