I am no longer on my historical romance kick. I've also read the Fever series. Done with both genres for a while.
I'm supposed to read Three Cups of Tea for my book group, the second non-fiction selection in a row, so I'm looking to branch out.
Please give me your recommendations for a good book (more on the literary side). Thank you!!
Any suggestions?

For non-fiction, I recommend both "The Greatest Generation" and "Flyboys."
Bob Woodward's bio of John Belushi, "Wired," is excellent.

Have you read "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett?
Another of my favorites is "Kane and Abel" by Jeffrey Archer.

For historical non romantic fiction based on real events I recommend The Last Englishman by Hebe Weenolsen. Based on the historical accounts and legends of a Saxon noble and mercenary returning to England following the Norman conquest and leading a resistance.
The Walking Drum by Louis Lamour is also excellent, and not a western.
Your mileage may vary... in accordance with the prophecy.
Do not back up. Severe tire damage.

I second the recommendation for Cutting for Stone. It is excellent.
I also really liked The physick book of Deliverance Dane.

I love Alice Hoffman.
I have a NOOK and have Pillars of the Earth on it. I started it and then had to put it down to read other things. I will circle back to it.
I have two really great novels by local authors to suggest:
The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent (About the witch trials in Andover, MA and Salem, MA) Excellent read! Drama, suspense, history.
The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry (About a family of women who can divine the future through patterns in lace. Takes place in Salem, MA. Set in modern day with flash backs to the past. Great characters, with a great twist at the end!)

Lula,
You have to read The Physick book of Deliverance Dane if you liked The Heretic's Daughter and The Lace Reader.
Look it up on amazon. It is about Salem, the witch trials and colonial women's history.
