This has been all over the news since the story broke (I am in Ohio). I remember watching it on the news when it first hit and watching Ramsey's interview. I thought he was so affable, and thought it was amazing. Very next day I was shocked that it went national.
So I was watching an interview again with him today and he was telling the story about breaking the door down with a Big Mac in his hand. I told my fiance who pondered (in a very serious fashion) "I wonder if he took a bite of his hamburger while he was breaking the door in? That is what I would have done."
I think what is so neat about this whole story is how real it is. Charles Ramsey is not a chiseled, buff, man with a superhero profession dashing into a doorway and pulling these girls into his arms, saving their lives. No, he's just a dishwasher, eating a Big Mac, minding his own business... an ordinary person doing an extraordinary thing. I really like him. He makes me smile.

I like (love) that he was offered a reward and he said give it to the girls, I have a job.
Sometimes people are just so good, GOD bless that man!

This guy, I love. I really really do. He is so real. He was just having his lunch and saw something that did not fit at his neighbor's house, and he stepped in to do something. He could have ignored and looked the other way and not gotten involved and pretended he did not see what he saw. But instead he acted.
He reminds me of the quote "The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing". This man acted. He is a hero for that. No doubt he has flaws (who doesn't??!!) But in the moment that really mattered, he stepped up and by doing so he saved 3 women and a child from true hell. God bless him.

I found him to be charming in a way; just a real dude in a WTF moment who reacted well.

I thought the same but on the news in my country apparently he has committed acts of domestic violence and was jailed.

I only saw the headlines about this, and haven't read the stories.
I wonder, though, exactly how a man's history negates the heroic act?
Was he, or was he not, a hero?
Should you withdraw your feelings of happiness and goodwill towards what he did?
ok, I did some more research. Here's a quote from his ex, who was his domestic violence victim:
“Ok so for the record ppl do change and you shouldn’t hold the past against someone,” she wrote Wednesday. “The (main) thing is Charles Ramsey did a good deed and those girls are safe is that not the most important thing?”
That's pretty much where I was coming from.
Take care of yourself. There's a great future out there. It won't come to you; you have to go to it.

Trustedher, that is a very powerful quote. And that does pose a good question... which one defines the man more... his good deed from the present or his bad one from the past?

Bad people can do good things under the right circumstances. Individuals show different people different sides of themselves.
My XH was an abusive man but if he was in the same position as Charles Ramsey, I wouldn't for a second think that he would have done anything differently. That doesn't mean that he has changed and couldn't still be a violent person, it just means that in that moment he isn't showing that side of himself.
I'm not negating the fact that he did a heroic things and those girls are luck he was there. But that also doesn't mean I regard him (as a whole) as a hero, just that one action.

it just goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished.

it's quite telling that his ex said this. Powerful indeed. IMO, this guy is a hero.

I too love this guy. When I watched the interview, I thought of the quote: "Sometimes when the fights begin, I think I'll let the dragons win. But then again -- perhaps I won't! Because they're dragons ... and I don't!"
So he did what a DECENT person should always do ... he ignored the fact there might be 'dragons' and he rescued the women. With a Big Mac in his hand.

Exactly!
I hate how anytime something positive occurs, media (or whomever) want to tear it down by putting a negative spin on it to "balance" it out. Often times we are too quick to lump people into good/bad categories. Humans are very dynamic people and are capable of lots of different types of actions. I'm sure the women he helped don't really give two shits about his past right now. Why should we?

his interviews are just so real and unaffected, his unintended wry observations and social commentary...
"i knew something was wrong, when a pretty, little white girl ran into a black man's arms - dead giveaway"
way to go Charles!
maybe because he's so "just a regular guy" and did something so "not regular" that has caught the world's attention, the burst of faith in humanity this guy provided, to all of us with his humbleness... is beyond incredible

I agree, TH. We don't know this man's whole story. We know of two events in his life. One does not discount the other.
I, for one, can respect him for answering Amanda's cries for help and saving those girls. As for the other his, ex "the victim" in his case, says not to judge him today on what he's done in the past. I'll take her word for it. She knows him, I don't.
God forbid I do anything as big as what he did....I'd hate to see the skeletons they drag out of my closet.

From The Adventures of Baron Munchausen:
Horatio Jackson: Ah, the officer who risked his life by singlehandedly destroying...
Functionary: [whispering in his ear] Six.
Horatio Jackson: *Six* enemy cannon and rescuing...
Functionary: Ten.
Horatio Jackson: Ten of our men held captive by The Turk.
Heroic Officer: Yes, sir.
Horatio Jackson: The officer about whom we've heard so much.
Heroic Officer: I suppose so, sir.
Horatio Jackson: Always taking risks far beyond the call of duty.
Heroic Officer: I only did my best, sir.
Horatio Jackson: Have him executed at once.
Soldier: Yes, sir. Come along.
Horatio Jackson: This sort of behavior is demoralizing for the ordinary soldiers and citizens who are trying to lead normal, simple, unexceptional lives. I think things are difficult enough as it is without these emotional people rocking the boat.

The fact that this one man ended TEN YEARS of HELL for these young women and a child means more than anything he has done in his past!!! It never ceases to amaze me that the media always have to find something awful about anyone who goes out of their way to help/save/support someone else...it's sad that he can't just have his 15 minutes of fame and be left unscathed!!!
The fact that he didn't hold out his hand for the reward money speaks volumes......kudos to Charles Ramsey!!!!!
