Bah. Going to the doctor today because I have been on my period for the last 3 weeks. I hate to get too detailed, but after I use the bathroom it looks like an overkill crime scene. I am going to discuss the fertility issue as well.
This is not the first time. When I was in my mid 20s I was on my period for almost 6 months. Doctor couldn't figure it out, honestly I don't think she even really tried. She just treated it by giving me birth control. Last yearly was 2011, everything was normal.
Sigh. This sucks. It is interfering with my life. I am constantly running to the bathroom, my self esteem is in the gutter, and I have no energy.
Anyone else deal with excruciatingly long periods? I just want it to stop.

Have they done any tests to see if fibroids are causing the issue?

I honestly do not know. When I was 12 I had this issue and became anemic. I was on my period for 6 weeks at that time... then it happened again in my mid twenties.... now again, I am 33. I read of that being a possibility. This is the worst it has been in years. Of course I try to google the answers and I find a lot of girls who have my issue, and there are no clear answers. :(
I dunno if it makes a difference but I am breaking out as well. I imagine from the stress of this bullshit. D:
And I am terrified this is affecting my fertility.

Stress can really mess up our cycles. A few years ago mine was bad. The dr did a test and said it was fibroids in addition to stress. They were too small and not worth removing. A friend of mine had her fibroids removed because she was bleeding a lot, they were bigger, and it was for long periods of time. She was anemic because of it. She went on to have 2 healthy kids.
I'm glad you are going back to the dr. Please let us know how it goes.

Sorry to hear this DI. You definitely need to get this checked out.
Have you had your iron levels tested? I've read that low iron can make menstrual bleeding even heavier. It's a vicious cycle, so you have to correct low iron levels too.

Endometriosis?
My periods give me a hard time...but thankfully I don't bleed longer than a week.
Hope they figure it out for you.

If this doctor can't figure it out, find another. Best wishes.

My first thought was fibroids.. I found out I had fibroids when I was pregnant with baby #2.. After I had baby #3 the fibroids got so bad that I bled for 35 days straight.. & not light.. like you it looked like a gory crime scene..
I had to go on lupron to stop the bleeding until I got my blood count numbers up & then had a hysterectomy..

I had mine for 3 weeks before and my doctor couldn't figure it out.I'd say have them run more tests I know it freaked me out.

Quite uneventful. Basically she said she thinks it is hormones since this has been an issue in the past. And, like all other doctors that I have seen in the past, we're treating the symptom rather than the issue. She put me on birth control pills (something I was NOT wanting to do) and suggested that when the period stops to go to an OBGYN (she is an NP).
No lab, no pap, nothing. Plain, old hormones. I tried calling the OBGYN today but the office was closed. As it is, I bought the BCP and walked out, very discouraged. I was not expecting any definite answers today, but yeesh I got the impression I was being brushed off.

Try calling the OBGYN tomorrow. This is NOT normal and it needs to be addressed. Too many times these problems are treated like they're normal and women suffer for extremely too long until some wonderful Dr finally steps up and says, "Hey! This isn't normal!" I could keep going off on my tangent, but I'll stop now
Anywho, yes, please call the OBGYN tomorrow and if you feel like they don't take you seriously, keep asking for another Dr until SOMEONE listens. (((DI)))

When I had extremely heavy periods that lasted a long time, progesterone cream helped tremendously. If you don't ovulate you don't produce progesterone so there is nothing to oppose estrogen which becomes dominant and tells the uterine lining to grow and grow, so when it sheds there is a lot to shed, so a lot of blood. BC pills will help but may have unwanted side effects. I didn't have side effects w progesterone cream. A naturopath, herbalist, nutritionist and / or acupuncturist will have more tools for working with menstrual issues than regular MDs.
If you have been bleeding heavily you need to supplement w iron bis glycinate, a form of iron that is easily absorbed and doesn't cause constipation. You may also need B12. It is really unhealthy to be deficient in these.
There are other options besides BC pills!

I'm sorry your GP wasn't very helpful. The truth is, they probably don't know.
Get in with the OB/Gyn as soon as you can. Then get ready for tests, tests, tests.

I got a lot of help from Planned Parenthood when I was in college. It was brutal for me as I was an athlete too. Between the work outs and the blood loss it was a mess. Found out it was an iron issue and the PPH set me up with a nutrionist to help me make iron a more regular part of my diet as opposed to taking a pill.

Yes. I had to take the B12 drops.
