My poor GD (14 months) -she started daycare in December - she has pretty much been sick constantly. Ear infections, colds, just got over a bout of Roseola (where she ran 105 fever), and today, she's in the ER getting bloodwork and x-rays and urine workup (has an elevated white count so had to go on IV antibiotics)...sinus infection, stomach virus...probably 99% of her illnesses have been viral.

But it's NON STOP! My poor DD - thank god she has a boss who has young children - he has been very understanding (she's barely worked a full week of work since she's started; luckily she can do some work from home).

I did read an article recently stating that "daycare syndrome" is quite common, while an annoyance, it is not the exception, it's the rule. They are also finding that probiotics are proving to help ward off some of this. It is also more prevelant in children without older siblings.

My other grandchildren (GS almost 4 years and GD 4 months) have been pretty healthy - DD is a stay-at-home mom. But they're going to deal with it sooner or later - GS3 is going to preschool this fall - that is when the bomb will drop I suppose.

I just feel so sorry for my princess and pray that spring and summer give her a break!

My son went to daycare. He had infection after infection. Now, the last time he was sick was first grade. He's in fourth now. Hopefully her immune system picks up and she can fight the terms better.

My daughter never went to daycare (she was born after I was laid off) and got so sick when she started pre-school.

What I read is that the first time kids are introduced into a group environment, they have several bouts of illness until their immune system gets used to it. And it happens whether the child is introduced at 6 weeks or 6 years.

But knowing that does not help the feeling of helplessness and sleeplessness and stress when YOUR kids is going thru it.

The good news is that it will pass and when she gets to pre-K or kindergarten, she will not be getting sick when the kids that have not been in daycare are getting sick.

But still, it sucks

DS and DD have been sick all winter long. We all got the flu (after the shot ) and both kids ended up in the ER.

I dont think DD's nose has stopped running since about October 1 or so...

DS starts preschool in August...hopefully he will be well 'illed' by then and will be able to get through it ok.

My daughter started daycare around 5.5 months and was sick for about six months straight (and so was I! I caught every bug she did!)

Now she's rarely sick. She made it all winter without so much as a cold.

I hope your GD stays healthy soon! I'd say she's probably through the worst of it by now.

My GD5 is now in junior kindergarten and GD3 is in daycare. They cross-pollinate their infections! I don't think I've ever seen them without a runny nose! This time of year, there may also be some allergies involved as well.

I can clearly see she's not the only one. We were really getting worried - like she needed to see an immunologist or something!

I'm starting to think that the daycare itself is a huge factor.

DD3 went to a place we were not thrilled with. "10-1" (12-1) ratio, and she always came home stinking like the restroom. Not pee... just bathroom smell. Turns out they take all the kids in anytime someone has to go.

I saw kids that were really sick looking in class, and DD3 got sick every single week. We had flu upon flu over the holiday season.

For these and other reasons we yanked her out of that place (she was miserable there so it wasn't difficult) and found an amazing new daycare. On top of the great ratio (4-1), the place smells clean, the outdoor play facilities are awesome, and they have a big focus on handwashing. There are toddler sized stations set up all over the place, and they are taught to wash their own hands. They wash when they show up in the morning, before snacks and lunch, and after being in the play yard. We've gotten a couple colds, but nothing near the black plague she used to drag home.

I'd consider where your GD is being sent. All kids get sick at daycare, especially their first year, but I think that with the right care it can be somewhat maintained.

BTDT So sorry to hear ((( to you her momma, and her ))) - My daughter started daycare at 4 months, and had an ear infection within a week. She was not off antibiotics for more than 4 days at a time for over 3 months. She had tubes placed at 7 1/2 months, and this helped.

She did continue to be my kid that got sick though until she started Kg.

Now she is strong and healthy and rarely gets sick at 13 years.

Pediatrician even did bloodwork to see if she didn't have an issue w/ her ability to fight infections, or was lacking any immunoglobbin that would prevent her from getting ill. Those were negative.

It just took time. Some kids are sickly when they are small. Some never get sick at all.
