I got a text from 13 at about 7:00 this morning:
First day of school feels weird without you. I woke up and ran into Mom's room and said, "We need to take the yearly picture on the porch. That's what Dad always did."
Then he sent me a picture of him and his little brother on the front porch with their backpacks.
Sweet kid!
Edited to change a grammatical error that I made. It was mocking me!

You've done a great job there dad. How sweet that your boy thought of you and the the tradition you created with them.
No one changes unless they want to. Not if you beg them. Not if you shame them. Not if you use reason, emotion, or tough love. There is only one thing that makes someone change: their own realization that they need to.

Kudos to your DS for keeping your tradition alive. Its always nice to know when the little things you do as a parent get noticed. Sorry you couldn't be there for your children today but it was nice that you were in their thoughts.

Thanks. I didn't mention it to him, but the porch picture has been on my mind the past few days. He's a thoughtful guy!
