Getting a car repainted

I should have waxed my car more over the years, but since I had DD I've slacked off. I need to get it painted. I've priced one place that said $1,017 plus tax for a small 4 door car. There is another local place that I am going to get an estimate from this week.

Has anyone else had their car repainted? How much did it cost?

Thank you.

$1,000 is pretty cheap. The biggest cost is in the materials. I helped a friend paint his GTO last year, and his material cost was nearly $2,500.

Using the cheaper materials will be fine, but it won't stay shiny forever.

..jo,

may i ask what car do you own? .. if you are restoring a classic, or just looking to spruce up the old beater Honda.. perhaps consider a 'DIY' shop to do it on the cheap..

..i had an old VW Beetle many years ago and took a paint brush and 2 quarts of a good acrylic paint, $40. !!!! looked great.. for the price

..the price.. with 'how much body work???' can vary greatly.. and the sky's the limit..

..if you've got deep pockets, of course!

Now, if you're looking for flames and skulls and pin-striping, then we've got to have you post the pics....

Mrs.smy scraped a small part of the panel behind the rear wheel of the Buick.... 1000$..

that was at the dealership though.. newer car so had to be an exact match

shop around get several estimates.. then you get to pick your price range..

good luck

My car is over 10yrs old, but only has 75k miles. It's a civic. I just need a low key nothing fancy paint job.

if you're looking for flames and skulls

I would love to see DD's face if I did that.

Thank you.

..i had a Honda CRX not that long ago.. kept it 17 years! got pretty rusty so, didn't make sense to pour money into it at the end.

..'low key nothing fancy is good for what you've got.

and i think you 'should go for the flames and skulls!!!

Sounds like a nice car jo! I've never had my car painted so I haven't a clue, but I'd love to see pics when you are done.

My husband does body work and paint. There are a lot of factors in cost but a big one is paint color and whether or not you are trying to change the color. If you are painting the car the same color and it's a basic color, you should be able to find someone to do it cheaper if it doesn't need body work. Red is the most expensive paint color right now (according to the guys at the paint shop). My husband recently painted a small pick up truck red and just about passed out when the paint, by itself, was over $500. And that didn't include primer or clearcoat.

If you want to change the color, $1017 is cheap because the painter will have to get the door jambs and trim or it will look off and it will be obvious that it's been repainted. It will involve taking off door panels and a lot of taping.

Essentially, $1017 isn't a bad price for a standard job because primer, paint, and clearcoat are likely to be at least half the price and painting an auto requires a lot of prep and labor. If the car is red, $1017 is a steal.

somanyyears - I'm pretty sure DD would give me a "wth" look when she saw skulls. Thank you for the idea. I may see if they sell magnet skulls and prank her.

click - Thank you. I love my car. It's weird how DD was in a carseat when I bought it and now she's almost old enough to sit in the front seat. Time flies.

Tears - I appreciate your insight. $500 for paint? My car is a dark blueish purple. I am not picky on the color, as long as it's some shade of blue, I'm happy. It's a calming color. My home looks like a smurf should live in it.

My first car, a used '71 Chevy Nova, was two-toned pumpkin orange on the bottom on the bottom and white on top. I had it repainted all pumpkin orange at a major car repainting place (that begins with "M" - don't know if I'm allowed to use the name here) for only $200. I eventually traded the car in; the last time I saw it, it was parked at a local shopping center with over 500K miles on the odometer, and the paint job was still holding up pretty well.

Be careful what you wish for the most - you may get it.

Wow! That's an awesome price for a paint job. That's the place that quoted $1017. I wonder if it varies by location or if they all have the same owner.
