Just one more realization that I'm thrilled to have the Gnat out of my life. I went to the nursery today and picked out flowers that I wanted and put them in pots that I liked. This may not sound like a big deal, but the Gnat was hyper critical about this. He always complained about us needing to pot some flowers, but never liked the ones I would pick.
We would go to the nursery and literally spend hours looking at flowers only to come home empty handed. He always bitched and moaned about what I picked, but never picked anything himself. I gave up planting flowers the past couple of years, because it was ridiculously stressful.
So today, I have pretty flowers on my front steps and down by my mailbox. I can't wait to see the disapproving sneer on the Gnat's face when he drops the kids off tomorrow.

I love this post! It is wonderful to have the freedom to enjoy flowers again.
They must look beautiful.

Your post speaks to me at lot!!!
I experienced the same thing - xh did not see a need to spend money on flowers, and unless it was a brush or a fruit tree it was not worth buying. After he moved out I got tons of pots and flower boxes, planted what I liked and how I have a little blooming paradise and tons of hummingbirds on my deck and in my front yard. There are always fresh cut flowers in the house, right now I have red and yellow sunflowers in celebration of fall.
I love the smell and the colors and to watch how they respond to tender, loving care .
Temporarily independent with the whole world at my feet.

I love being able to buy plants and not have to worry about having enough money to pay for FWS's Boy Scout stuff.
I'm still getting used to just thinking about me and putting me as a priority.

I gave up doing flowers when xpos retired and said he would like to plant a garden that never materialized and planted flowers in the places I had put them instead. He also complained about my choices but ended up planting mostly the same ones, just different colors. I did them since he left and have had some of the most beautiful ones yet.
He may sneer, but I bet he thinks they are beautiful too, just will never admit it.
Finding what life could have been....... Why didn't I see it?
