Thinking of taking a fall trip to San Diego.

Looking for any SI'ers from there who can offer advice on where to stay (at least what part of town), what to do and do it for less than $3,000 for 6 nights.

Flying from North East and first time for FWW and I to there.

I've been there for business quite a few times. The GasLamp district is great place to stay (I always stay at the Hotel Indigo by Petco Park). It's easy to get around, lots of shops and restaurants.

I loved my trip to SD 3 years ago! We stayed near Sea World and the beaches and although it was off the beaten track a little bit, SD was easy to navigate. I'd probably stay somewhere else if I went again.

The San DieagoZoo is kind of expensive but it is wonderful and worth the entrance fee. Plan on spending a whole day there and know you will still not see everything. Go midweek rather than on the weekend to beat some of the crowds. If you like military things, the naval yard has tours of old Destroyers. Go to Sunset Beach and explore the tidal pools, go to Point Loma and tour the lighthouse, take a day and visit Coronado for shopping and beaching and visit the local brewery on Coronado for lunch or dinner. The flea market was fun too. My favorite restaurant was The HashHouse a GoGo for brunch--huge servings so bring an appetite. Fish tacos anywhere are a must too!

Have fun. It is a wonderful place for a vacation!

Got to see the zoo

AJ lives there and I second the Gaslamp district. He just moved there from Pacific Beach and loves it.

Padres game (depending on your travel dates) - Petco is in the Gaslamp District – or – a Chargers game

Visit Old Town for some kick ass Tex-Mex and 'ritas (Fred's rocks).

After visiting the Midway memorial, go to the KC BBQ where they filmed Top Gun to check out all the movie memorabilia

Plan at least a day on Coronado Island

Take the trolley if not to get places, just for the fun of it.

Plenty of beaches – aforementioned Pacific Beach has tons of cute bars and restaurants, but is really more of a young person’s (read BIG DRINKERS) paradise.

Too many good restaurants to name, but some of my favs are Jimmy’s Famous Tavern and in Gaslamp: La Puerta, Café 21 – AWESOME brunch foods – you MUST have the Tiramisu Pancakes – and the Southpaw directly next to Petco.

ETA: Any of the Cohn restaurants - with kids, check out the Corvette Diner at Liberty Station especially.

If you have time, a day trip to La Jolla to walk the beaches, watch the sea lions and cruise around downtown.

And if you have even more time, walk through Little Italy. Now there’s some good eating!

Children"s Pool in LaJolla...so cool to see all the sea lions and to walk along the paths.

I've stayed in the Gaslight district and it's fine but look into The Del on Coronado Island. It is SO awesome.

The Zoo is a must. It and the Toronto Zoo are the two best in this hemisphere.

We love SW and have been to Orlando's numerous times. Now having seen the documentary Black Fish, we're re-thinking our desicion to support that.

I visited SD for the first time last December, unfortunately only for 4 days. I loved all the food I had but my two favs were on the outskirts:

Aqui es Texcoco in Chula Vista

Get the lamb (barbacoa) plate and eat happy

Inexepensive, filling, delicious (if you like lamb...and tacos). Nondescript strip mall location.

Café Secret in Delmar

Was voted best Ceviche by San Diego magazine in 2013. For me, it was the best ceviche I've ever had. We only had ceviche so I don't know about the rest of the food...but I still dream about that ceviche! A cute restaurant - good for a romantic meal.

We rented a condo on the boardwalk in Mission Beach. It was December so it was not as expensive as it normally would have been. Being landlocked as we are in our normal lives it was nice to be right on the beach.

There's an interesting little nook at Liberty Station. I highly recommend going to dinner at Stone Brewing Co. Their outside seating is in this amazing garden setting - and the firelight at night is so awesome. (Also, getting to try their beer is a must )

I third the idea of staying in the Gaslamp area. Lots to do there. The San Diego Zoo is amazing, and Balboa Park is fun to tour as well.
