I have to be honest with myself and you.....i really need to lose 20 #'s to get where i really want to be.... BUT i'm soooo tired of jumping from one diet plan to the next.. In the last two years i've paid for weoght watchers and lost 10's then gained it back...then i got a nutriionist for 4months lost 10. #'s gained 7#'s back, then Quick weight loss and lost 15's #'s but i was starving so i couldnt do it anymore so i stopped..i was told that they probly had me on the wrong program.... I should have been on plan 2 instead of 1...... Then i tried Paleo diet lost 3-5 #'s, recently my co workers trainer gave her a meal plan that i tried and liked......so far i lost 2#'s and stopped weighing myself beause it was a roller coaster and i driving myself crazy........now Im looking st Nutri System, i believe Im in love with tbe words Diet and weight loss....

I've put out alot of dough chasing a number.... Something is terribly wrong with me....i know my SO is getting pretty tired of the whole thing.... He keeps telling me "i love your body just the wsy it is" but i do not like my body so his words go in one ear and out the other... Maybe i will start going back to the gym 6 days a week and see what happens....i believe i really need to up my cardio and protein intake, sorta like what i did on the paleo diet but i got so tired of eating meat...when my coworker gave me her meal plan i welcomed the change...

Anyone else in this camp?

Stop dieting and change your lifestyle. Diets always fail so you have to change your way of thinking. Your 'ideal' weight shouldn't be a destination but a journey.

The 'new' way of thinking is to shoot for not gaining weight rather than trying to lose weight. Evidently some people are having success with this.

Take this from someone who lost 85 lbs and has kept it off for 7 years. By following Weight Watchers original points program, I learned to make healthy choices. I still treat myself and my weight does fluctuate a bit, but it's not the yo-yo back and forth.

ETA: I also work out 'religiously' weight training is my best bet for keeping the weight off. I love to follow HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) programs. They're usually set to music and have names like Body Pump, Women on Weights, etc. I now do two classes a week of weights, cardio (spinning) and yoga. I do spin & yoga on Monday, weights on Tuesday and Thursday, spin alone on Wednesday and yoga alone on Friday.

You can do this...

I agree with Saz.

I lost over 150lbs a decade ago and kept it off for 8+ years. I got sloppy the further out I was and slowly gained back 40lbs. I'm not obese, but I am heavier than I want to be.

I know from prior experience that dieting only makes it worse. Like you, I can drop 10-20lbs fairly easily and quickly, but then I gain all of it back PLUS some.

I'm in a holding pattern so far this year. I am not trying to lose weight, but am focusing on maintaining my current weight and making better choices. I've learned (and continue to learn) what works for my body NOW. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll likely never be 120lbs again and am adjusting my expectations to accept 150-160lbs as liveable.

Ten years ago it was easier to lose and I could eat most foods. That is no longer the case (thanks Father Time and Mother Nature ).

Since the beginning of the year, I've lost a few pounds just through making food changes and moving a little more. I'm not hungry and I don't feel deprived.

Once that new thing is no longer new and is now habit, I add another change. The gradual changes stick better for me.

Good luck!

Oh! With regard to workouts, I'm rather frugal and hate paying for certain things.

Youtube has a TON of great workout videos (full length). I love Billy Blanks (Tae Bo guy) and use his workouts a couple of times a week. There are a bunch of others as well, so you can mix it up and keep from getting bored.

I will say, that I ended up paying for DDP Yoga (late night infomercials over the holidays...ugh).

I enjoy yoga a lot, but for a few reasons, I don't want to take a face to face class. I figured I'd pay once for a set of discs that I can use at home and found that I love this program.

Thanks Saz and GB...... i'm definitely not new to making lifestyle changes... A few years ago i was a RAW foodie... I've also have done alot of body pump classes (2-3x's a week), Zumba, Spin (2-3x's a week). I parlay between BP and Spin because they are on the same days... I guess i could do Spin Mon-Wed and Spin on Sat....then either Cardio or Yoga on Sun....

I get bored doing the same wkouts and change it up.... We now have Zumba fitness on Sat at 12pm and im thinking about doing this wkend....

Right now i wkout Thurs (full body weights wkout, 20-30 min cardio), Fri(45-1 hr cardio), Sat (spin 1 hr) & Sun(Yoga or just cardio & full body wkout)...

I'm changing it up a bit this wk....tue, thurs, sat & sun i may throw in an xtra day....

Which diet plan did you feel the best on? What gave you the most energy, balanced moods, best athletic strength?

I'm curious about what feels the healthiest for you vs. the lbs lost or gained...

The trick is to incorporate the changes form each plan to find what is your plan.

At the end of the day Portion control and exercise is really what it's all about. Weight Watchers works because of this. It is not unreasonable, and you are not banned from anything, you just have to make a trade off for it somewhere else.

Personally I have found, and many of my patients working toward weight loss find that they do better with higher protein and lower carbs. This helps because proteins tend to be denser, and make you feel fuller longer, plus you avoid the blood sugar swings you tend to get when you eat carbs.

It sounds like you are always struggling with the same 10-20 pounds. Do you have a realistic goal set for yourself? Is being that 20 pounds lighter really where you should be? There are some diet and exercise gurus who feel we have a natural set point for our weight, and despite where we want to be, our bodies tend to keep us at this weight. It is also where we seem to have less health issues, blood pressure isn't too high or too low, cholesterol panel is good, aren't so thin that you catch every bug that you are exposed to, feel strong enough to do what you want and more, etc. I'm not sure I buy it, but there does seem to some research that supports it.

Anyway. Quit dieting, and make real and lasting changes that you can stick with. Include doing a food journal. This does work, and makes you accountable to yourself, and gives you the opportunity to review what worked and what didn't for a week at a time. I would also urge you to only one time per week. We all have daily ups and downs, that can be crazymaking if you let it.

I've found that periodic journalling can be a very effective tool. I'm supposed to be at around 1600 calories a day for my age and activity level.

I journalled just after Christmas and was horrified at the result. What a reality check!

I've cut wayyyy back on my wine consumption (my biggest vice and my greatest pleasure...) and have also managed to virtually eliminate dairy, which is a big one for me as I love cheese too much.

Those are two major changes that have made me healthier the last couple of months. I still enjoy a pizza or drinks with friends when I go out, but I'm not out every night of the week.

Once I'm finished this course I'm taking and the fine weather kicks in, I'm going to hit the bike trails and burn a path between here and the rec centre to use up some free tickets my colleague gave me.

I'm learning that my setpoint is definitely heavier than when I was younger, and I'm OK with that.

Fifteen years ago I was 20 lbs over what I am now, and I low-carbed and lifted weights to burn that off. It has not returned, so I'm happy about that.

Yo yo dieting is a great way to confuse your metabolism and wreck your body.

I found that cutting out night snacking, alcohol and adding workouts has really made a big difference for me.

Try fitnessblender.com They have hundreds of free workouts.

I do know that there are bumps in the road on the way to health. My latest 'bump' for me is happening because I got a concussion in a car accident over a month ago. If I exercise too hard, I get headaches now. Sometime it's easy to feel really down about it, but I can only do what conditions will allow me to do.

Good luck with finding some balance. :)

Thanks Tush & Faith.... I believe i will get back into some type of weight training.. I believe thats what im missing, the thing is i get sooo bored in the body pump class... So For the last wk or so when i go to gym if i dont do Spin class, i start with the eliptical or stair madter for 20-25 mins then i set up a circuit... I will do 3-4 sets of kettle bell swings, step ups, wall throws with the 12# weight ball, and planks then stretch....

I'm also looking for ways to workout better....

Someone asks about my weight....my goal weight is 165.... While on QWL i got down to 174 and i felt gr8..right now im pushing 190 again, im 5'7.....

I may look into crossfit but paying for a gym membership and crossfit seems a bit unreasonable..,IDK...

Stop dieting and change your lifestyle.

THIS!! and also, grieve your old way of using food as a coping mechanism and find a new one. Knowing you won't ever use food again that way is something you have to grieve for, I've found. You're giving up an old lifestyle for a new one.

I also work out religiously. It's like brushing my teeth in our house - hubby and I do it and our kids do it. It's just something we make time for in our day.

Really mix it up - we swim, bike, do hot yoga, run, walk, I do an extreme level fitness class 5 days a week. Today I was up at 5 am to swim for an hour. Not sure I would have done that if hubby hadn't needed to go. I do the fitness class with our daughter. This is our thing we do together. Point being - an exercise buddy that kinda holds you accountable?

I hate working out. I'm too introverted to join a gym, despite the free membership offered by my job. I ended up buying a good bike, and it's been the best thing I've done. I can go wherever I want, and I'm required to push myself. If I ride 10 miles from home, I've got to ride 10 miles back. I eat better than I used to, but I don't limit myself. I drink water at every meal now. If they have something healthy that sounds good, I'll try it. I have to be honest and say I still eat junk fast food once or twice a week, but I have an odd job where I kinda have to sometimes. When it gets closer to going to bed, rather than eat something, I'll drink one of those slim fast drinks, just so I'm not eating right before I go to bed.

So doing all that, my goal has been to be in better shape, not necessarily lose weight. I was a little astonished when I found out last week I've lost 25 pounds since December, and I'm getting in better shape every day. I love riding my bike. I have found several neat trails around town, so my scenery is always changing. I want to be in better shape so I can spend more time on my bike.

Don't focus on losing weight as a goal. Focus on being in better shape. Find something you like to do, then you don't have to force yourself to do it. You might surprise yourself.

"It's a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart."
