I think I'm going to scratch my eyeballs out!!!! Will they always itch so bad towards the end of the day? I've had them out for two hours and my eyes are STILL itchy!

Try a different solution. Maybe you have an allergy to it. The contacts shouldn't cause itching.

I agree. DD had a bad reaction to the generic solution. She switched to Opti-free and had no problem.

Do you have allergies? Where we are the allergies are bad this year. That could have something to do with it, too.

Definitely talk to the doctor if it keeps up.

Switch solution. I have 5 contact lens wearers in my house and 4 different solution bottles. Only 2 of us use the same solution.

Drink water thru out the day. It helps

That sucks, I've worn contacts for almost 30 years and have never had that problem. I'd talk to the doc about trying a different brand/type of lenses. I told my doc I wanted the best lenses, not the cheapest, and he rec'd daily disposables. I love them.

Definitely change solutions. I can use only Biotrue. Some use a preservative that can cause a reaction. Make sure to soak your lenses in the new solution first.

Mine do and i have worn contacts for 32 years, i really think it is the brand he gave me dont agree with my eyes, I have always went 8-12 hrs wearing them and now I mostly wear my glasses unless on occasion, I am not happy with that espicially since summer is coming up and i hate to sweat in my glasses.

I get this problem with seasonal allergies.

Take them out. I had scratchy contacts and ended up scratching my cornea.

Also, i agree with the contact solutions. Sometimes the generic really isn't the right choice.

I've had this issue and is the reason I dont use contacts much anymore. I tried different solutions too but nada. So I wear them when I go dancing or something but day to day is glasses.

I'd also say to switch solutions. Opti-free made my eyes itch so badly I couldn't stand it.

Also, do not sleep in them, ever, even if you have the kind that say you can.

Make sure you disinfect etc. regularly. I've had great luck with Revita-Lens, especially with the high water content lenses.

I have the bifocal contacts. They say they're supposed to last for a month (I never sleep in them.). I've never been able to get a pair to last more than three weeks, so I just toss them a little early. Figure it's better than pink eye!

Back in the day before my LASIK surgery I wore contacts and had a terrible time with solutions. I actually had to use a preservative free type saline that could only be open for a week before having to be discarded.

I agree with the others suggesting changing solutions. I had a terrible problem with my contacts after trying a different solution. My eye doc said my corneas looked like they had been "lightly sanded".

I had to take a 2-prong approach afterwards. They changed my contacts to a different manufacturer that used a different material. I also had to change to the "clear care" disinfecting solution that is peroxide based. Both of those changes made a TREMENDOUS difference in my eye comfort and being able to wear contacts.

If I were you, I'd start with the solution. Try the Clear Care and make sure you ONLY use the special case that comes with the solution. It has a special titanium disk in the bottom that creates a chemical reaction with the peroxide to clean the lenses. I've been using it for at least 5 years and I would never try anything else.

If your eyes still hurt two hours after you've taken the lenses out, then I think you should go back and talk to your optician before you put them in again. (I'm assuming that you're wearing soft lenses. My first lenses were hard - not even gas permeable and one had to be really determined to wear them in order to survive the initial "coals in the eyes" pain! I don't suppose they even make them now, which is just as well...)

If it's not a major problem with the actual lenses, then the irritation could also be due to something other than the solution. Makeup, for example. Mascaras, especially the lash-thickening type, can be a real problem for lens wearers - for obvious reasons. I find that face creams and sunscreen can sometimes cause my eyes to sting, too - occasionally to the extent that I have to surrender and wear glasses for the rest of the day instead of my lenses. Usually it's because I've rubbed my eyes and managed to push some of the cream into them. But touching your eyes when you have sunscreen residue on your hands can have the same effect.

Similarly, be wary of rubbing, or touching, your be-lensed eyes if you have anything else on your hands. Were you wearing your lenses while you cooked, for example? Even a tiny amount of spice transferred to the eyes from one's hands can be very painful. (Yes, that IS how I know!) Even rubbing your eyes after peeling an onion. Basically, anything that would normally make your eyes sting will make eyes with lenses in hurt even more.

Don't panic. You'll get there in the end. Even though I'd worn contact lenses for decades, when I switched to soft lenses, I thought I'd never get to grips with the different method for inserting and removing the things!

DS13 can't wear contacts b/c they irritate his eyes so much. The only solution that *slightly* helped was the kind that you have to leave in the solution for 8 hours (I can't remember the name right now).

When my allergies are bad, my eyes will itch. Wearing my contacts makes it worse. If it is due to seasonal allergies, Benadryl May help some. You optometrist should be able to recommend/prescribe you some contact-safe allergy eye drops. Do NOT use OTC drops unless they specify they are safe for use with contacts. Also, I tried using generic solution a couple of different times when money was tight. Both times I ended up with eye infections. I always caution against generic contact solution.

I switched to "clear care" and they still itch, but not as bad. I follow up with the doc on Friday.

I would also make sure that the contacts are not inverted. The times that they itch terribly are when I have them turned inside out, for lack of a better turn. When you hold the lens up it should be perfectly round, so to say. If you see a sharp edge around the rim that means the contacts are inverted (and if they already explained this to you so sorry).

That's an excellent point! I've made this mistake often and it can be very painful.

I was taught to hold them up and look at them from the side. Bowl-shaped is correct: saucer-shaped is wrong. But the difference isn't immediately obvious to me. (Maybe it's something to do with the prescription?) Sometimes the lens looks like a bowl to me, even when it's inverted. And I had a lot of trouble with this aspect of the lenses when I first got them. (My son, who has always worn the soft lenses, used to have to do it for me!)

Nowadays, when I'm not sure whether I've inadvertently inverted the lens, I always have to look at it, then turn it inside out and look again. Once I've seen both sides, I can always tell which is the 'saucer' and which is the 'bowl'.

I'm glad the new solution has helped, Knightsbff. I hope things will be even better once you've had your follow-up appointment.

You might have dry eyes, like me.

My eyes are ridiculously dry, I have to wear slightly more expensive contacts that are specifically for dry/sensitive eyes. It's the only way I can wear them all day. I have monthlies, daily wear ones were like torture!
