Help! A co-worker got married recently. It was out of state (where same sex marriage is allowed) so we didn't get to go.

She is having us all over to her house on Friday and we (the co-workers) want to turn it into a surprise wedding reception. But I haven't the slightest idea how to do that! One co-worker is making a cake. I'm in charge of everything else. Other than downloading the Chicken Dance to my iPod.... what else? Some champagne for a toast, of course. But what else would make this festive and fun?

Oddly enough, I used to be an event planner. But it was corporate, not weddings. I know the creative minds of SI can help. Please

I think understanding the venue and the time of day are most important as they will guide you with what might work.

Outdoor/Indoor

Appetizers/Meal

Social Hour/Dancing

re-enact the

- cake cutting

- first dance

- toast

True!

It will be a small group (12 people), indoors and also on a patio. Late afternoon. Everyone is bringing a dish to pass and the hosts are cooking the main course. They just recently bought this house, so this is sort of a house warming also.

Considering it is at their home, and you are kind of hijacking their party, make it easy to put together, and easy to clean up.

Dollar stores are great for serving platters. I’d tell everyone to plate their own food and bring a disposable serving utensil as well. Bring some “nice” plastic serving ware, you know the faux silverware and faux china. Maybe a couple table cloths and ribbons to tie around the legs, but see how they have everything set up before you pull these out, they might not be necessary

Since it also a housewarming, maybe some nice potted plants for decorations. If you bring candles, bring matches, don’t assume they will have anything. Gifts, music, a portable speaker if you have one. That should be plenty.

Party city will also have banners and balloons. Do you know what the wedding colors were? If not, just get some ivory balloons.

A simple, yet nice cake and balloons go a long way and are simple enough to clean up. Maybe a video of the guests wishing them well or telling a "how we met the couple" story or something???

If they own the home, in addition to some house warming gifts, how about a tree to plant outside, in recognition of their union? Have a tree planting ceremony.
