Yes, you can buy eboooks at other places besides Barnes and Noble. It just requires loading them from a computer onto your Nook via a USB cable.

Oh, I should also mention that if you are only interested in connecting via wifi and don't really care about having the 3G coverage that is offered with the regular Nook, Barnes and Noble just came out with a wifi-only version that's priced at $149.

I got a Nook for my birthday about 10 days ago. I love it, for all of the reasons previously mentioned. I think I would love a Kindle too. They both have pros and cons.

I downloaded Amazon's Kindle for PC to my laptop a few months ago, and I have downloaded a few books from them and read them on my computer.

ETA: I believe the price for the 3G model is down to $199 indefinitely...it is a reduction, not a sale. The Kindle seems to be $189.

I love my kindle.

Saves having massive shelves for many books, and the screen is easy to read and pretty responsive.

Not that Aussies can get a nook, but I looked at the specs and was a bit concerned that the colour screen at the bottom is still a colour backlit TFT LCD like on a computer.

Nook users:

Is that screen a bit bright when trying to read the non-backlit e-paper screen just above it?

Can it be adjusted for brightness for low light situations like reading in bed?

Cheers,

PR

The light at the bottom goes to sleep fairly quickly, I would guess under 10 seconds. After that you can use the bottom to turn pages with out the lights turning on. It is bright, but it doesn't interefer with the screen above.

It can be a bit distracting sometimes in those 10 seconds.

Well, this is marginally related to the topic...but I downloaded Kindle for Android and have started reading two books on my phone.

I *love* it. Type is easy to read and Amazon sends the books sooooo quickly. Almost automatically.

I recently purchased the nook for $149, wifi only. I figured there weren't going to be that many times I needed to download a book *right now*, so I opted not to get 3G ($199).

Also bought a brown cover with snaps which gives it more of the 'holding a real book' feel, and am expecting them to come out with an app that releases *book smell* soon.

I've had my Kindle now for over a year. Best thing since sliced bread.

I, too, have noticed that SOME books are a few bucks more than the average $9.99, but there are MANY books out there that are FREE.

I'm in the market for a new cover for my Kindle - THAT'S how much I use it! Everyone knows that Amazon gift cards are always welcomed - and I blow through them pretty quickly. (I read a LOT.)

I've downloaded books in the middle of NOWHERE whith no problem.

I LOVE MY KINDLE!!!!
