Don't use alcohol on piercings!! It's caustic so they just create a bad environment- I know it's an antiseptic but sea salt will do the same without damaging healthy cells

My Dad's a Consultant Surgeon and some stuff can't help but rub off, even on idiots like me

Oh and if you can get hold of H2Ocean, it's awesome- it's basically a saline spray.

When you want the body to accept something foreign it's best to create a healthy environment so the body doesn't freak out- alcohol on a gravelly wound- fine- on a piercing- no!!

Edited to add- I wear a titanium ball closure ring only 2mm and I have a small flesh tunnel in the other ear- always used sea salt when healing.

As I said I have more sensitive piercings and they healed fast using H2Ocean

I only wear the earrings that you pierce your ears with. I like them because I don't have to worry about the backs falling off. I can't even get them off by myself!

Our DD has the same problem and the only earrings she can wear are 14k gold (not the gold plated...actual gold ) and plastic. She will get pus built up and it forms into a little ball on her ear (much like you said with your DD).

Are you just using the backing that comes with the earrings? I have trouble with the metal squishing up against my ear at night and the silicone tubes are much less aggravating.

Mama, that's what I think is going to happen with my DD. She's going to be expensive

Crescita, we use the backs that come with the earrings. The starter backs don't sit near the ear and with her regular earrings I make sure not to push them on too tight.

FYI Titanium does not contain nickel.

I have plenty of metal allergies- allergic to nickel, stainless steel, 10k gold, 14k gold....pretty much all I can wear are platinum, titanium, 18k and above gold, rhodium, and palladium.

I can't wear any post style earrings at all, no matter what the material.

You may want to try a thin titanium or 14k gold hoop earring to see if that helps.

Luckily worst case is you just stop wearing jewelry...normally the infection clears up as soon as the irritant is removed.

So I sifted through here and I have another hypothesis, that might be running concurrent with getting the right kind of antiseptic.

I had a piercing in a... um, less than conventional place, and it started to reject after several years. At first I thought the skin was getting inflamed and hard around the openings, but the place I went to get it removed (tattoo parlor - Hi mom!) told me that my skin was trying to push the piercing out.

That explains why it wasn't painful or infected, but just kinda got hard.

I reluctantly took the piercing out and everything healed up just fine.

Maybe her ears are just rejecting having a piercing?

There'll always be an attempt to reject on anything other than cartilage but even they can be rejected. The trick is to take really good care of the healthy cells- such as being super careful with antiseptics- nothing caustic... Happy cells make a happy little hole ready to be speared

Ok here's an update.

We put new light dangles in her ears this morning. We took them out before her shower. They almost didn't come out. It was like the hole closed up around the post. She said it hurt to pull them out. We pressed on the hole and there was no lump, no puss, no pain, nothing. I wanted her to shower without earrings in, but when that happened I put her titanium starters back in. After her shower and our card game we spun the starters and they moved fine, again no pain so we were relieved. I told her until we can figure this out she should stay wearing only her starters.

We don't want them to close up, she loves her earrings.

Now my over-protective mom guilt is kicking in and I feel like a mutilated her little ears. I feel so bad for her.

My mom was worried for DD because she had an allergic reaction to the nickel in her earrings (back in the 40's/50's) and now she has a lump of scar tissue in her ear lobes. She's scared DD will be the same

You might wait longer to take her earrings out. Taking them out and putting them in each day may be irritating or even wounding the lobes. Leave the earrings in, use a good non drying cleaning solution, move the earrings gently to ensure there isn't a crust forming over them. This is from my own experience with pierced ears. I have two sets.

Old fashioned preparation H is great for pierced ears. Does not try the skin, decreases inflammation and has some antimicrobialmproperties. Sounds strange, but I have seen it work numerous times.

Stronger, I'm not going to switch them again. Not until we get this all figured out.

My ears are double pierced as well and the only issue I had was in my left ear, second hole. It got infected. My MIL who's a nurse helped me then (when she was nice) so when my daughter had issues in Dec I remembered what my MIL did (hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic ointment on the posts)

I would have imagine my DD's ears would've been fine by now. But I guess not.

I appreciate all of your advice and everyone who has chimed in. She's wearing her titanium starters (especially today and tomorrow it's gym days at school) and we're keeping it that until her ears are better.

Regarding spinning the earrings. Don't so it. Soak of the crusties and then the earring should move freely. If you pick off the crust or spin the earring, it can cause the crust to rip of healthy, new skin both outside the hole and inside.

The advice that a mall place gives you is dead wrong. Go to any tattoo/piercing parlor's page and look at their aftercare info. If possible always get piercings done with a needle, not a piercing gun. Piercing guns are not sterile. The people aren't educated in blood born pathogens or even how to do anything sterile. They use te same marker for everyone's ears. Earrings in a piercing gun cause blunt force trauma by ripping a hole through the ear and damaging the inside of the hole. Needles slice a clean hole that an earring can slide through. Ok now that I sound preachy and annoying, I'll get off my soap box.

It's true- I'd only ever get done with a needle- I think it's clever how the guys who know what they're doing even slightly alter the angle to avoid rejection and it's not noticeable once done... I could literally talk tattoos and piercings all day haha
