I just had it removed from my tongue. I had a biopsy that was apparently very thorough because he got it all on the first shot. Thank God. But if he hadn't, they would have done a second surgery like yours.

As long as it's been definitively removed, you will likely just have to go for a lot of follow-up checks. I have to go every three months for the next three years, then every six months for two years after that.

It's scary as hell, I know- but catching it early and treating it aggressively will make all the difference. Try to breath, so everything your doctors tell you, and ask a million questions.

oh... and DO NOT start looking it up on the internet. What you need to know is information about YOUR cancer in YOUR situation with YOUR treatment. Nothing else is relevant. Everything you can find online will turn you into a worried wreck.

I have no idea what you are going through but we are all here for you. I agree with Eranda-don't google or look anything up. I've done that in the past and was convinced my situation was just as bad as the horror stories.

You'll be in my prayers.

Thank you everyone. It's always encouraging that no matter the problem, the frequency of posts (or lack of in my case) or the length of being here...there's always someone around SI to offer a hug, a personal view or advice. You may not ever know what you post does for someone...I'm telling you it makes a difference. I thank you and appreciate your responses.

The surgeons office called today - there will be no preconsult visit. I'm booked for surgery on the 14th and the doctor will speak with me before he does the excise.

I'll have more info from my GP on Wednesday when I see her in person. Until then I'm staying busy and trying not to think about it...tonight I'm having a bottle of Shiraz called "Screw It" just because.

Thanks again.

I release the past so I am free to fight for my future unencumbered.

Shoot, I went to the plastic surgeon for a "consult" and after looking at it said, "You have a problem with me doing this now?" So we got it all done in about 40 minutes.

GDM had one on his scalp--much more painful and involve than the one on my hip.

You will be fine.

Thanks again for the thoughts. Met with my brother and his wife on the weekend and filled them in. I've decided not to say anything to my father at this point. He's 93 and his wife is having a hip replacement next week...so his rock is going to be needing his full attention. We lost my brother 3 years ago to Pancreatic Cancer and my mother 12 years ago...unitl I know more I just can't add to this.

I'm in a holding pattern at the moment. My procedure scheduled for the 14th has been cancelled until they can find me another surgeon. Apparently the Oncologist from the Cancer Clinic (who I've not met or heard from) has requested a Sentinal Node Biopsy to be also conducted at the same time as my larger excise and the Plastic Surgeon I was booked with can't do that.

I gather they inject a dye in the area they took the tumor from(yeah fuck me - they are now referring to it as a tumor)and follow as it drains to the nearest lymph node...then they remove that and test it to see if cancer cells are present?

I don't know if this is routine anymore or what...it's just getting me a bit more anxious though.

So I hurry up and wait now.

I release the past so I am free to fight for my future unencumbered.

Hi Lighthouse

I hope you are doing ok. It is a very scary diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Acral Lentiginous Melanoma this past April. My lesion was located on my left little toe.

Yes - little toe. It can happen I had my toe amputated and thankfully, was diagnosed with a low Stage 1A.

Good resources for me were AIM at Melanoma, Melanoma International Foundation, and Melanoma Prayer Center.

I cannot stress enough to get anything that strikes you as weird or "funny" checked out by a dermatologist. Don't wait. The deeper the growth, the more dangerous the melanoma lesion can be. When in doubt, cut it out. Wear sunscreen, make sure your kids are protected, don't forget feet and toes, don't use tanning beds.

Hope you will let us know how you are doing.

Sending healing thoughts. BP
