btw
For people who are not already practicing but are following these posts, yoga is accessible for almost everyone. If you want to start practicing there are community yoga classes and other ways to access the benefits of yoga.

the ugly newbie version
I tried to get my 12yo to do it. He wouldn't even try.
We did bird of paradise in class last night. I almost skipped class. I'm so glad I went.

yea coco we are seriously bad !@# sparkly unicorns :) doing this challenging stuff at all.
PS in case anyone is lurking reading these comments and getting the wrong idea, yoga is not a contest and I don't think that bird of paradise is "better" than childs pose.
I am just really benefitting from the feeling of strength challenging myself in these poses is providing.

That is a great suggestion. I do miss hands on adjustments and assists tho especially with trying to move into more challenging poses.

I'm working on the next class I'm teaching. I think the focus will be twisting with revolved half moon as the peak pose. Half moon is my nemesis.

Oh,I like half Moon. I just always fall over when I try to look up. 🤣
I love those poses that look so simple, and they are, but they aren't easy. I learned recently that Vira 3 is considered a level 1 pose because it is technically simple. It's definitely not an easy pose, though. I wouldn't introduce it in a level 1 class.

I love that this thread is 3 page long! Half moon is my favorite. Eagle - not so much.
I went to someone else's class last night - I learn so much from other teachers.

Yes, that's a major reason why I belong to a yoga studio. I take other people's classes as often as I can. Not only am I always learning, but I also end up doing things that I would probably never do on my own.
Shehawk, I can do an ugly wheel, too. From how it feels, I imagine it looks more like an inverted table. For the life of me, I can't figure out where I'm restricted in that pose.
I'm told I'm very open in the hips and shoulders. I can do pretty deep cobra and updog. I can lay almost flat on my back in hero, so my quads are pretty open. I have the same trouble with dancer. 🤷♀️

I just did not have the strength to get into it. I could hold it if I was in it and with a decently smooth c curve but getting into it...no way...
but I got into an ugly version last night so maybe more tonight
anyone have suggestions on poses to do in a 30 minute or so practice session before going into wheel?
e.g. hero? cobra? fish?? some hip opener?

I'm sure you can Google and find several suggestions for preparing for wheel.
You need to have open shoulders, back, hip flexors, and quads. Definitely various backbends, bow pose once you've warmed up some. Lizard, lunge and clasp your back foot with a hand and pull it toward your butt, cow face pose with arms, eagle arms.
