One year since reality changed

My D-Day anniversary is coming up in a week and I can feel it already.

One of the hardest parts right now is that he does not want the infidelities or affairs spoken about ever again and I am trying to sit with what that means for me. I found out in September 2025 and then more came out later so the last year has not felt like one clean wound - it has felt like layers of reality being pulled apart one by one.

The original betrayal was years ago but the knowing is recent and that is the part I still find hard to explain. It is not only what happened then - it is the way the truth reached backwards and changed memories I thought were safe - family life children ordinary days holidays birthdays health worries and all the normal parts of marriage suddenly had another layer I did not know existed.

I have been using SI as a safer place to put some of this because I have not told friends or family the full details and I do not want to carry it completely alone.

Reading and replying here has helped me feel less isolated less like I am the only person whose past suddenly became unstable and more understood, which I want to thank you for...

With the anniversary coming closer I can feel the grief and rage moving around again but I also know I have survived the first year of knowing - I am still standing I am clearer than I was and less willing to abandon myself to keep everything looking normal.

I just wanted to put this somewhere with people who understand that D-Day is not just a date - it is the day your reality changed and sometimes your body remembers before you are ready...

He has no right to dictate your healing. He has no business controlling the information. You have every reason to grieve as long as you want especially since he has prolonged it by his cowardice.

You are heard. You are understood.

crazycatlady Thank you for this.

That is exactly the part I am trying to sit with - that healing cannot really happen on his terms only and silence may be easier for him but it does not make the impact disappear for me.

I think the prolonged part is what has made it so hard because every new layer has felt like going back to the beginning again. Thank you for hearing me and understanding - it really does help...

You build your history based on the knowledge that when you choose someone you give them your most precious thing.

Yourself. Wholly.

There is just about nothing else a living breathing person could ever gift more to someone.

Is the thing you give to your family, is the 5ing you give to your children.

Donating life, your life is no small thing. Is everything you could ever give and you give it with trust that it is kept as lovingly as you keep theirs.

Betrayal means finding out that while your gift was encouraged and consumed, it matters little to nothing for as it was regarded by your cheater.

It gets discarded, soiled and destroyed without a second thought for a trivial and dirty act that is undeserving of any value. Is just greasy, self indulgent sordid behavior.

And that’s what was valued above the greatest gift you ever had to give another human being.

The day you find out in full, not just in feelings, while is not the day all was destroyed, is the day when the ground disappears for you and you find yourself in a wasteland made of putrid waters, a swamp full of stench and corruption.

That’s what your inner garden of Eden was turned into, that’s the respect for your greatest gift.

Of course revisiting the date is uneasy, it is a reminder of it all, you may try to clean up the corruption of the swamp and you may very well succeed at it.

But this very act is a reminder that you gifted your garden and it was turned into a swamp. Ruthlessly.

And by the person who still expect you to owe them your greatest gift again.

You not only have to endure that, but you owe them silence of any reminder of just what they are capable of and willing to do at the cost of your gifted life.

Realizing that, repaints every memory with the stench of betrayal, is a corruption that tarnish all, not only your body and spirit, but every memory you built while the stench was allowed in secretly into your life, gets corrupted forever.

It wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t feel this way.

You have a claim to reclaim what was yours and demand accountability

BackfromtheStorm Thank you for this..the part about giving someone your life and trusting them to hold it carefully really landed with me because that is exactly what marriage felt like to me. It was not just love or routine or years passing - it was trust, family, history and the belief that we were both protecting something that mattered.

I think that is why the anniversary feels so heavy. It is not only remembering the day I found out - it is remembering the moment the ground changed under me and I had to look back at my own life with different eyes.

And yes the silence part is hard because it can feel like I am expected to carry the impact quietly so he does not have to keep facing what his choices did.

Thank you for understanding - it helps more than I can explain.

BackfromtheStorm Thank you brother that made me emotional in a good way and think that is what I am trying to hold onto right now - that something can still grow from this even if I would never have chosen the ground it had to grow from.

I do feel stronger than I did a year ago even if some days still knock me sideways - thank you for seeing that.
