"old Man's War" by John Scalzi
I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it.
I thought I'd be more awesome.

I'm cruising this thread looking for some easy but entertaining fiction ideas. It seems like everything I have picked up to read this summer is just BLAH and I don't finish it, same with movies. I told IC I think its me, she laughed and said nah, she was having the same problem.

Am I the only one who doesn't love Unbroken? Every couple of months I pick it up again and try to get into it, and at this point in the story we're at the Berlin Olympics. It is so very slow. I feel like I've been reading forever, and have moved an inch through this man's life.
I've tried picking up where I left off on the audio version, but again just feel like in the hour plus of my commute, the story barely moves. I feel like I'm pushing a boulder up a hill.
Does it pick up when he goes to war?

circe - I dunno! I blasted right through that book...
I *think* it's foundation-laying, so you really know who Louie is - and where he comes from, for later in the book.
Also, I just thought of this - some stories you/me may be used to - we read for the writing skill, the turn of phrase as well as the story, kwim?
One thing I did notice about the author - she stays way out of the way of the story, she lets it "tell itself"...that might be part of the uphill deal as well.
Keep plugging!

As of this morning, I am officially in between books.
I am currently reading the Harry Potter series along with my son. We both finished the fourth book, Goblet of Fire two days ago.
I am also currently reading the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. I finished the fourth book, The Shadow Rising, this morning.
Will be moving on to book five of both series shortly.
Crescita ( member #32616) posted at 11:36 PM on Wednesday, May 7th, 2014
Losfer, I have both of those series on pause right now, although I'm only on book 1.
Harry Potter I'm concurrently reading in Italian, I've been kind of lazy about concentrating so I'm on a break.
Wheel of Time I'm doing as an audio book during my commute but the library subscription keeps expiring and I have to go back on the wait list.
Just started "Cutting for Stone" and "the Last Werewolf" hopefully one or both will hold my interest.
